Anyone else notice an uptick

in trolling/decrease in actual conversation the last 6-8 months here? This used to be a quieter site, but the conversations were real. Now there's more-and-more people who just want to argue or annoy you.

reply

No, about the same percentage of real posters to trolls but I do respect your opinion...a few of the clowns can be annoying

None of the trolls live very long, the good sorts are steady contributors here

reply

Yes I've noticed too 🤡

reply

Online conversation in general started to nosedive around 2015-17, but there were still a few places you could find decent ones; this sight being one of them. But lately, it's just filled with idiots. who respond with one-line responses that serve no purpose other than to agitate.

reply

Just put them on your ignore list.

reply

Yes, it does seem like it has gotten worse with the trolls and arguing.

reply

The good side of it is that I see threads with the same cast of characters arguing endlessly, hopefully without the regulars getting too involved. As soon as I click on it and see who is in on the discussion I just move on.

Just like politics, we should have a troll section. They know who they are.

reply

It's a reflection of the decline of our society in general. Self-absorption, rude behavior, lack of courtesy and respect... there's been an increase in this sort of behavior over the past two decades. Social media and overdependence on electronic devices is a major contributor.

I had always envisioned the 21st Century as an era in which we would make great progress. The opposite appears to be happening.

reply

I'm inclined to agree.

I will say I enjoy the web and social media very much - or at least I used to - but it's changed. I remember an old coworker introduced me to IMDB. I was like, "Wait, what? A place to discuss TV and movies?!"

reply

I've always been in favor of new technology (being a science-fiction fan had a lot to do with it) and being progressive (the true meaning of the word, not the political definition). However, I think we have reached a point where all this technology is becoming detrimental. Instead of it being a means to advance humankind, it's become a crutch and an addiction for too many people.

reply

That depends on what you consider "actual conversation," I particularly felt IMDb didn't have trolling problem so much as a tolerance to people with different opinions problem, being that people were intolerant to anyone saying something contrary to what they thought. Perhaps it's that people have gotten more annoyed by minor issues and always feel the need to respond which only further annoys them that the other person then responds back.

It's like arguing that you don't want to be arguing, the problem lies with both parties for continuing the actual conversation.

reply

Well, I think that's a problem too, but that doesn't mean trolling didn't happen.

reply

Not really - I find it ebbs and flows; most of them don’t hang around very long.

reply

Put them on your ignore list.. I would keep my eye out for new users.
