Anyone else cutting off all ties to modern day culture and society?

Recently, I've been losing myself in a lot of retro TV shows, music, books, etc. The reason why is that it feels to me as if modern day culture and society is becoming more dehumanizing and nihilistic, to the point where more people are forgetting what it means to actually be and feel human, as well as live in an actual society where you have to share a space with others.

For example, this will be the 20th anniversary of 9/11. I'm a New Yorker who lived through that experience, and I can tell you that the culture and people were a complete 180 from what they are today. I remember walking through the streets of NYC in the weeks after and legit feeling if the entire country was united and all pulling for each other. And now it's the opposite. We went from the entire country going ape shit because almost 3,000 people die on 9/11, to the entire country not giving a fuck that 500K died from COVID.

The reason why so much has changed is social media, to be sure, but modern entertainment has been fueling nihilism and anti-humanistic values for well over a decade now. The generations that grew up being taught to get a hard-on for antisocial sociopathic characters (seeing them as sexy for being damaged or cool for being non-conformist) are now coming of age.

To me, an example of how fucked up culture has become--and how it's destroying modern day society--is that song Pumped Up Kicks. I remember hearing that song and loving it because of how romantic it sounded...only to hear the lyrics. This is a romantic-sounding song about a sociopathic kid that wants to kill people.

Another example is anime. Don't get me wrong--I do love anime but it's weird what gets pushed in this country. It's the demented stuff in Japan that gets pushed in the US, not the more wholesome fare. The worst example is Death Note, where the viewer is made to experience most of the story from the perspective of the villain, who's basically a serial killer.

Anyway, the point is that I'm pretty much done with modern entertainment and culture. I'm just going to lose myself in anything that predates 2010. It's nothing to do with age. I'm just sick of nihilism and anti-humanism and wonder if anyone else is feeling the same way.

SOCIAL MEDIA IS A SICKNESS...I DO NOT PARTAKE...BUT I THINK YOU ARE CHOOSING THE WRONG ENTERTAINMENT...THERE IS JUST AS MUCH QUALITY FILM,TV,MUSIC,ETC AS ANY OTHER PERIOD IN TIME...YOU JUST HAVE TO LOOK HARDER...TIME HAS A WAY OF WASHING AWAY THE BAD AND BEDAZZLING THE GOOD.🙂

reply

Social Media is a major cause of trouble, totally agree and steering clear of that nonsense is the best course

I also agree that cable TV shows and movies of high entertainment quality are always being made

Recent music however...Barf!!
I keep the local classic rock station on at all times

reply

THE BETTER MUSIC IS HARDER TO FIND...THEY ARENT REPPING GREAT TUNES ANYMORE,JUST SELLABLE MUSICIANS...WHICH SUCKS.

reply

I love going to the movies I'm just very selective in what I see. I don't watch any tv shows anymore because shows that aren't political have become political. Just look at what happened to The Bachelor. Also the Equalizer show with Queen Latifah sums up everything wrong with modern tv shows. There's nothing believable about a fat black woman being an action star but of course she is the lead not to entertain but to make a point.

reply

I stopped watching network TV a few years ago because:
• The sitcoms aren't funny.
• Police and crime dramas have predictable endings.
• Competition programs, "reality" series and awards shows are all BORING.
• There are too many commercials. An hour-long broadcast slot contains almost 20 minutes of ads and repeated promotions for the same upcoming shows.

Cable/satellite channels aren't much better.

reply

Also I don't care about how many people died from COVID because everything about it was weaponized by our politicians to oppress the United States population and put the Deep State back into power.

reply

You don't care because you're either a sociopath or a narcissist who didn't have to worry about someone who was at risk. Your claims that your lack of empathy was due to politics is just a cover.

reply

I don't care when far left liberals claim I'm supposed to wear a mask to show I care about them when they want me dead because I'm a white male. You can be a paranoid germaphobe all you want. You don't have the right to impose your will on me at the sake of taking my rights away all because of your unchecked TDS.

reply

If you think people want you dead then you are the one who's paranoid.

And there's no such condition as "TDS." This is another invention of the social media.

reply

"I'm just going to lose myself in anything that predates 2010."

Narcissism is a major problem in American culture. One of the products of narcissism is the "it won't happen to me" mentality. In that respect, "anything before 2010" isn't much better.

reply

No I’m not; there’s still plenty of current entertainment that I enjoy.

reply

I agree! Society peaked, probably some time in the 90s.

As a conservative person I don't like how things that were once considered far left are now becoming mainstream.

reply

I think I'm starting to do that too when it comes to entertainment. Nothing beyond a few choice shows really interests me, and it seems like every tv show and film they have these days is studded with hideous landmines, such as

- SJW woke messages (not even hidden)
- characters nobody likes or can identify with
- no character development at all
- making all the white, straight people look weak and stupid
- making all the women smart while the men are weak, overly aggressive, and stupid
- Mary Sue's everywhere
- having at least one or two gay people who steal the show along
with their disgusting romances
- dropping F-bombs every chance they get
- dragging kids into that shit
- nihilism (like you said)
- boring stories that are so damned stupid I can't even finish them
- gratuitous violence that doesn't fit the story
- acting like having kids out of wedlock is the coolest thing ever
- people falling in love for absolutely no logical reason other than it's in the script
- defiantly messing with history by aggressively casting black people as historical figures who were never black to begin with
- sticking black people into roles they never would have had in the time period their characters are in
- inter-racial couples only, including some that make no sense whatsoever (like Asians and blacks sleeping together)
- destroying franchises people have loved for decades with shitty new films/tv shows

So yeah, I've gone out of my way not to watch a lot of that shit anymore. I like what they had on tv and in the theaters before 2015.

reply

Yep at times the characters just deliver political speeches that aren't related to what passes for a plot at all.

reply

I didn't post my comments so you can post your triggered Alt Right garbage about black people and women in mass media. My complaints are about nihilism and lack of humanity being celebrated.

So, if you think we're batting for the same team, you're sadly mistaken, You're a prime example of how social media is morally bankrupting people and why I haven't had a social media account since I closed my Facebook account in 2010. You're one of the mindless minions.

BTW, see my post about what a Mary Sue is: https://filmsdeconstructed.wordpress.com/2018/02/13/reclaiming-the-term-mary-sue-from-mra-troll-max-landis/

A Mary Sue is a character who's basically an alter ego of the writer. It never had anything to do with your GARBAGE take, by way of Max Landis, that it's a female protagonist. The fact that all it took a sociopathic idiot on YouTube to distort and twist a term like this is a shining testament to what an intellectually bankrupt wasteland both social media and mainstream media are. A misogynistic hack with a history of abusing women dribbles "Mary Sue" as code for "women should only be whores and strippers in movies; if they're not, it's Feminazi/unrealistic bullshit" and millions of minions just believe him.

reply

While it's true that you wrote nothing about black people and women, you seem to agree with AmeriGirl26 on other points.
Like nihilism.

Besides, it is not like anybody who dislikes SJW woke messages is a "mindless minion".
Even if you don't agree with AmericanGirl26 on everything, she seems to hardly go along with the elite wants.

reply

Someone got triggered here, but it wasn't me >:)

reply

I can't stomach new tv and films the PC indoctrination is out of control. They aren't even creative about it.

My job involves me dealing with the violence and decay.if society.so I see how bad it's become and it is mostly due to "progressive values" so yeah I tune the world out as much as possible.

reply

See my post above to AmeriGirl26 above. You are one of the mindless minions being corrupted by mass and social media. One of the classic characteristics of inhumanity and lack of communal spirit is teaching people like you to be instantly "triggered" by minorities and women in a positive light.`

reply

Is it?
I don't believe that the people in charge of mass media today will have anything to do with racism or sexism.

reply

The people in charge are interested in only one thing: money. Whatever content that results in higher ratings is the one they will continue to push. It's all about ad revenue, not quality or creativity in programming.

reply

Sure, but that is also why they're really afraid of offending anybody.
So it makes them push political correctness to extreme levels some times.
