Have you ever mentioned someone well known and the person you're talking to hasn't got a clue who they are?

I once met someone who had no idea who Charles Darwin was.

I meet tons of Gen Zers who never heard of Tears for Fears, Simon & Garfunkel, or A-Ha but know the lyrics and melodies of their songs. LOL

Back in 2002-2003, singer, Michelle Branch was quite big in the pop industry.....at least during that time. I mentioned her to a friend of mine back then, she had no idea who she was.

- my parents also don't know Katy Perry that well.

I did a speech for a class and a 31 year old kid had never heard of Johnny Cash before. A few other people had never heard of him as well. All just happened to be African American.

They’d never heard of The Man In Black?

reply

No they hadn’t, although I can’t imagine they had never heard one of his songs.

A woman I work with who was 35 at the time had never heard of The Doors before and one of my friends had never heard of them or The Who either.

reply

I hope you bitch slapped your friend when they said that.

Being a student of history, it amazes me eroding affect that time has on names.

The best example I can think of is Sulla.

Sulla lived two thousand years ago and he was the Darth fucking Vader of his time. He was the first Roman general to cross the Rubicon with his armies and sack Rome. He dissolved the Senate and ruled for decades, he died from natural causes and was highly respected and feared even when he stepped down. So feared was he (his nickname was Felix the lucky one) that statues of him were untouched centuries after his death.

A would guess 95%+ of the world does not know his name.

Power of time.

I actually had some fun with this when we had 2 Chinese exchange students come to have Thanksgiving dinner with us a few years ago. See, both of them had adopted American names in addition to their own, so people could talk to them easier. Both were young ladies, and one of them chose the name Lucy. We started making "I Love Lucy" jokes, and she had never heard of the show. So I had fun explaining the tv show to both of them.
