What’s the most amazing place in nature you’ve been?

The Grand Canyon. Photos cannot do it justice.

Iceland. Will blow your socks off. It's like being on a different planet every 20 mins when driving around it.

reply

Can you elaborate? I'm very, very curious!

The scenery changes dramatically there. One minute it's full of black lava fields, then it's like being on Mars, then by boiling mud with so many different colours, then you are by calm lakes or massive waterfalls or large rock formations or glaciers or mountains. It's seriously mindbending to go around the whole country. Would love to do it again sometime.

Uluru in the center of Australia. A giant red rock in the middle of nowhere surrounded by red earth. It takes at least 3 hours to walk around. Truly spectacular and a very sacred place in Aboriginal culture.

The Grand Canyon is not "just a big hole in the ground" like some folks describe it. I suspect they've never seen it. And Uluru is not just "a big rock" either. I imagine it's just as awesome as the Grand Canyon when you're lucky enough to see it in person. I know it used to be called Ayers Rock, and I'm pleased that it has been returned to its original Aboriginal name. I didn't know it can be climbed, although I understand that activity ends later this year. It should - it's a sacred site, not a tourist trap.

reply

I respected their wishes and didn't climb it when I was there

👍 It's good to show respect.

The Great Smokey Mountains. They're breathtaking.

reply

I've heard that from quite a few people. I've driven through that area twice, but both times it was at night. One of those times was during a ferocious thunderstorm. Not fun.

reply

Mount Rushmore was spectacular.

It's on my bucket list. I've never been to or through SD, and I live right next door in MN! I've been to a lot of other states, but not that one.

reply

Make sure you go. It's a sight to behold and you when you leave, you'll never be the same. At least I wasn't. I felt as though I was in the presence of magnificent artwork.

Kanchanaburi, Thailand or Gaylord, Michigan

I've never wanted to observe nature more, yet, I haven't been "up north" in over a decade. I've traveled to many countries, but they're all in the city - that's where the hostels are, the backpacking couchsurfing community, etc... And now, I can't stand driving 2 miles, so I just need to put the idea behind me. I did enjoy a movie from the late 60s, "A Place For Lovers" with the Alps, but I'm more of a lakes kinda guy.. I just want peace and quiet - and a view from my writing table of a lake, or nothing but land. I've always lived in the city (except for 3 weeks on a farm in Australia).

There is a beach on Bahia Honda Key that is under about 1 to 2 feet of water going out at least 80+ feet, a very gradual slope. The sand is soft and white, the water is crystal clear and bathwater warm, fish swim through your legs because they just don't care and aren't afraid of the people. You can sit down on the beach with that warm water up to your chest or shoulders and it's just amazing... Or in the shallowest part, just lay back in 6 inches or less of water.

The submerged beach acts as a breaker, so there are no waves or turbulence to the water (absent inclement weather, of course). I laid there gazing out for so many miles across the flat ocean at such distant sky-scraping storm clouds with lightning flashing through the billows. Such atmospheric violence, yet they were almost in another world, as the day was clear, sunny, and so peaceful.

I've never heard of this place. Thanks for the link. Gorgeous spot and I love your description of your experience. I lived in FL for a couple of years but never made it to the Keys. Wish I had.
