I just watched it for the first time and knew nothing of it. About twenty minutes in, I was thinking "Is this really as awful as I'm seeing it?" Went here, and started reading the reviews. It was uncomfortably unfunny at times, and some of the jokes you could see coming (so slowly) that when the expected 'funny' part was revealed it just seemed boring and cliche. I made it through to the end, but wasn't even sure how it ended. Did Stockard get left by her family when the whole truth came out? That was my take on it. Anyway, it was really bad IMO and it had nothing to do with advanced negative input.
Except the Democrats who were racists (called Dixiecrats) realized the Democratic Party was against racism and segregation. They then turned to the Republican Party who agreed with the Dixiecrats and their racism, and now the Republicans control the South with their racist rhetoric.
Yes, he was. He was a small man with classic "Short Man Syndrome" with Narcissistic Personality Disorder on top of that. And you can tell by LH's storylines that he was sadistic too. But oh how he laughed, that overindulgent laugh. I guess that was supposed to cover his major failings as a human being.
If you ever saw the movie "Ghost Story" with Wasson, it was actually Bill Maher as the stunt double falling out the window showing his own one inch penis. Wasson's was too large and they needed Maher's tiny dick to lighten the mood to get past the censors.
We all know that Pa fathered Albert by a saloon pro above the saloon in whatever town that was. Ma got her revenge by having Grace who was fathered by Uncle Chris. The funny thing was that while they laughed over things while in bed and chomped on popcorn with their mouths open, Pa had no clue about Ma's deceit while she knew all about his. That's why she giggled so much in bed with Pa. It's believed that Ma also conceived Mary with the town rich boy but he didn't want her so she had to find some dumb bloke who thought that babies were made in 6 months. Caroline was so shady!!!
It was a small Texas town, and they were local football heroes. They could get away with anything. It was a much different time back then.
Thy name is Cybill.
But she wasn't just an ordinary black girl. Her part was of a totally jaded poor black girl who was wise beyond her years, always trying to embarrass Trixie and get under her skin "I almost threw her out of a window in Little Rock"?? "Remember that time you were almost thrown in jail Miss Trixie?" Just hilarious and delivered with such deadpan.
I agree, the B/W is a huge "character" in this movie. In the same way that The Last Picture Show was. I can't imagine feeling the same watching it in color.
Funnily enough, I would take Jack Lemmon off of the list! Even Brando. I thought Ryan was excellent in this, and I'm not much of a fan of his. Even Redford wasn't much in The Sting. Ryan totally conveyed the frustration of a would-be pop with his maybe/maybe not precocious child. All of the actors were wonderful in PM. I just watched it again on Prime.
I'm an 80s kid, and having a 20 dollar bill would have been excessive, considering the small town I grew up in. She's lucky no one noticed her with that much money, since she would have been mugged in my town.
It is a FICTIONAL story. Why aren't you crying about how totally unrealistic it is that Verna can turn herself into a raven and blow up houses too? Get real. You're too silly to even comment further on.
The whole plan went pretty much as planned, except they wanted to kill Rollie so that there were no 'loose ends'. Kill Rollie, DeFranco gets away, and they win. It was always the plan to kill Rollie.
Because she was annoying AF.
She really was incredible for a debut performance. So much poise and the camera loved her. There was no indication that she'd never acted before. She was a natural. I just watched this on cable, and was very impressed.
I adore this comment, because this sums it up for me. I *FINALLY* got through this movie, last time I attempted to was 25 years ago. I fell asleep several times back then during it, enough to see the end, but today I decided to bite the bullet and see it. Get this effer out of the way. Guess what, I fell asleep AGAIN. Determined beyond belief, I started again from the beginning, forced myself to stay awake, take in all the details I could and just watched. And watched. And watched. And then the sled was burning.
Okey-dokey. Got it done. Still didn't "get" it. I was looking for the camera angles and maybe because I've seen thousands of films after CK was made, I just didn't see anything terribly groundbreaking. The cinematography was good, most definitely. But, I still don't understand why so many people regard this is THE best movie of all time. Maybe I'll take a film class at our local university. This still leaves me going "Huh?"
Yes, I see that. Just continuing the convo.
As Nikki Haley has pronounced, America has NEVER been racist. See the problem?
For one, that was not a jury of his peers. Two, do you really think if the defendant was black that he'd get an unbiased verdict? I don't. It showed the problem with the jury system at the time. This film is very progressive, and that's why it's a classic.
