Glenn and Maggie, 'The Walking Dead'.
"I didn't read the book, so maybe there's more of an implication that they are indeed physical beings creating this mayhem."
Correct, in the book, they are physical. It's not just an implication. They do physical things.
In the movie, it seems they are not physical.
You can't use book lore to explain away any problems in this movie. They are too different.
Absolutely not. The prevailing theory by characters in the book is that the beings are something other-worldly that we cannot comprehend, and it drives people to madness.
Nothing about the creatures taking the form of our greatest fear is mentioned or even implied. These people must be thinking of the Boggarts from Harry Potter.
It seems rather unhealthy to feel shame over something in which we had no part.
Also, in Solomon Northup's book of the same name, he never tells Master Ford that he was a free man who was kidnapped, and Madam Ford never tells the black mother that her children will soon be forgotten.
The two incidents you are most upset about were made up for the movie.
