I've seen it (paid for it) twice in 3D, and would go watch it again if I had the time.
A very good film indeed!
While I agree both Mikkelsen and Fassbender are in an elite class of their own, the role of Roy Batty, as a "super-human", would require someone of a much more commanding physical presence; no less than 6 foot with an equally imposing frame. Neither of these men meet these criteria, imho.
Rutger Hauer is a naturally big man, no gym or supplements!
Deckard is a replicant.
This was speculation in the 1982 version, but it's pretty much implied in 2049.
There's a clear giveaway of this fact when Wallace is about to introduce him to the cloned version of Rachael. Deckard says "i know what I feel" That's the same remark K/Joe makes when Deckard's daughter tells him THE (his) memories are "real"
Wallace also flat-out tells him his initial meeting with Rachael was staged.
As a replicant, there seems to be constant inner conflict regarding memories. Are they implants or real? With K, the conflict only comes to the fore when he's assigned the case, which is why he flipped-out right after the revelation.
She played the part very well and she's f*&king hot of course!!!!
Only a few details from the book make it to the screenplay. For the most part, Hollywood takes the film in a different direction. There's a test Deckard uses to determine if a replicant is human or not, called The Voigt-Kampff Test, which is a lot more detailed in the book than in the 1982 film. 2049 tries to make that point.
All in all, i was disappointed by the book since I read it after the film and had all these preconceived biases on what to expect. With very few exceptions (like Watchmen), I think that's generally the case with any book turned into a film. If you read the book first, you're disappointed by the film, and visa-versa.
The book is short.
With a mix of artists like Hans Zimmer, Frank Sinatra, and Elvis Presley, it's difficult to place it in one genre or category, which was also the case of the original Bladerunner soundtrack.
