He's still sitting at the Cool Kids Table, so he'll survive for a while. Besides, this is the perfect opportunity for him to play his "my personal integrity has made my enemies envious, so today I'm a victim of their attacks" card.
They "trusted the science"!

NPR - now there's an impartial source!
I still get her confused with Sheryl Crow.
What "ball" is he taking and where is he "going home" to? People don't care about news anchors like they used to when it was just CBS, NBC, and ABC. Wherever he goes, he'll be seen by far fewer people and making a lot less money. He's probably just chasing a fantasy about the "good old days" and will be completely forgotten in a matter of months.
Don't forget Sade!
This movie came out in 1999.
Shatner did Airplane 2 in 1982. Wasn't that a high-profile release? Did nobody realize it then?

Everything is explaIned and justified with the magic words: CLIMATE CHANGE.
Robert Redford, for 1992's A River Runs Through it.
Ultimate cop-out: blame EVERYTHING on climate change while fire-fighting budgets have been consistently slashed.
