Unlikely to get Oscar noms for Best Picture and Best Director

https://nypost.com/2024/12/05/entertainment/these-movies-just-saw-their-oscar-chances-plummet/

Not listed in AFI’s top 10 movies, which is seen as an accurate predictor for Oscar noms

The only realistic Oscar nom for Gladiator 2 seems to be Best Supporting Actor for Denzel

reply

The academy tends to prefer more”artsy fartsy” stuff for better and worse.

reply

The original movie cleaned up at the Academy

And it's not like historical epics like this don't get attention. Ffs, the BP winner for last year was Oppenheimer.

reply

That’s a drama tho which always get attention versus a super violent historical action movie like this.

Gladiator cleaned house, except—famously—not for best director. Looking back, Ridley Scott should have won. And the film won big (actor - picture) back when the Oscars actually meant something.

reply

Why would it? This movie sucked

reply

I don't think it was really in the awards race to begin with.

I think Denzel has a very good chance of being nominated, and wouldn't surprise me if he won. The UK Bookmakers have him as 3rd favourite to win.

I can see Mescal possibly get nominated too, (but won't win) especially after his SNL hosting, which was great, I think it will give the movie a boost, and his profile has risen from SNL....I can see him sneaking in as the 5th nominee.

I have watched the movie twice, first time I didn't think much of Mescals performance, it seemed quite weak if anything, and a bit 2 dimensional...the second time I saw it (two days ago), I felt it was a much better performance than I had first thought, it had more depth for me, and the ending which left me feeling not much on the first viewing, well, that gave me the feels the 2nd time.

In the UK, the bookmakers have Mescals 9th favourite, behind the guy doing an impression of Trump, and Daniel Craig in some obscure movie... I can see him moving up the chart above them two at least, and likely sneak up a few more places into the top 5.

Is Ralph Fiennes no. 1?

reply

Nah, he is 2nd favourite, Adrien Brody is numero Uno...

Other odds here too, the bookies are often right on the Oscars, if not they are usually close.

That link is restricted for me. They said Guy Pearce was excellent in The Brutalist. I haven’t seen it.
