Did anyone else hate Craig's southern accent?

Couldn't stand it. Too fake (obviously he's British, but that attempted southern drawl was too much at times).

it didn't bother me as much as other people. i found it maybe more amusing than annoying.

reply

That was the point. His character was meant to be totally over the top.

reply

Yeah. He was teetering on the knife's edge of parody of the "legendary detective" character. It's played with a lot and those "quirky characterizations" like the accent help sell both the embracing of that trope and the tongue-in-cheek presentation of it. It sends itself up.

reply

It did not bother me at all but I have heard a similar accent in film many times before so it was not that big of an adjustment for me.

reply

Not at all. It's just one of those things that became trendy to talk shit about. I've lived in the south most of my life and frequently heard accents just like his. When people started to try and emulate the accents they heard on tv and the internet, you started to hear it less, but there are still plenty of old school people, with no interest in tv or internet, that speak with the "old south" accent every day of their lives.

reply

no, it made his character. he was spot on.

reply

There is no single "southern" accent, any more than there is one "northern" accent. His was a New Orleans accent. (And there are a couple of those, in fact.)

When a well-known actor attempts a role outside his/her comfort zone or persona, I feel it's up to the audience to view the performance as if you knew nothing about the actor. If you didn't know Craig was British would you have enjoyed the show? If the accent seemed fake, could you be sure it wasn't a dialect you were unfamiliar with? That said, I have seen some films where an accent was wildly out of place or poorly performed, but not this one. At least for me.

And after the first few moments of hearing it, I was able to completely enjoy his performance.

I find it so forced it was distracting.

this ^^ says it all. there is nothing to add.

Who doesnt like a foghorn leghorn accent from an Englishman? That was actually less of a distraction for me than the the english dudes and aussies who have that universal gruff in their voice whenever they're doing any other american accent....which is like 99% of them. I dont mind that either by the way
