Arthur can't be the real Joker

when arthur meets bruce wayne, the latter is about 40 years younger than him.
that would make the joker from 'the dark knight' an old geezer of 70-80 years.
in fact, heath ledger was even 5 years younger than christian bale...

A) You are only the BILLIONTH person to make this point

B) This movie is not a part of TDK movies, so that point is moot

C) The third letter of the alphabet

D) You are assuming that Phillips cared about Joker's age matching up with Bruce Wayne's age. That would only matter if they were planning to do a traditional Batman vs. Joker scene or sequel. Since they likely are not, the plot hole is irrelevant

reply

but why was the scene of arthur meeting young bruce wayne included then? what was the point of that scene?

I thought the Wayne stuff was the weakest part of the movie and was more of a distraction than anything else. The age discrepancy occurred to me during the movie. Also Thomas Wayne (and to a lesser degree Alfred) were portrayed as jerks. It was as if in order to make the Joker the protagonist of the story, they needed to make the heroes that we know somewhat the villains. They could've told the same story with some random rich a-hole running for mayor and the story wouldn't have lost a thing while leaving the reputation of the Wayne family intact.

That said, I loved this movie and thought Phoenix was fantastic. I just personally would rather this have been set in some non-specific time period between the murder of the Waynes and Bruce becoming Batman. Other than perhaps a mention of the murders past I'd have preferred this be free of the Wayne family.

There's a theory that Joker has already met Batman...

*Spoilers*

When Arthur was talking to the psychiatrist at the end and he said "I just thought of something funny","but you wouldnt get it" then a flashback to Bruce Wayne on the crime alley with his parents dead in the ground and I found it wierd why would Arthur find this funny.

What if that ending scene takes place in the future where Batman already exists and got the Joker put in Arkham but somewhere before that (or while inside arkham) Arthur discovered that Batman is Bruce Wayne and realizes he created Batman the day he became the Joker hence why he finds it funny.

Interesting. Convoluted, but interesting.

reply

A simple flash forward is convoluted?

reply

I can haz opinion?

reply

Yes, it's convoluted

The movie clearly indicates that the final scene in Arkham happens after the riots. So it actually being a scene that takes place decades later, without any context, would count as convoluted

It depends what you mean by real. This Joker can be an inspiration to the next one, and so on and so forth.

reply

This movie isn't interested in telling a superhero story. For all we know, Arthur remains in Arkham for the rest of his life and Bruce goes on to become mayor and cracks down on crime as opposed to becoming a vigilante.

reply

Not really. Bruce is probably 8-10 here. In the hospital there was something said about Arthur being a little kid 30 years ago, so Joker is probably 35-40. That makes them closer to 30 years apart. The sequel could be set about 15 years later with 25 year old Batman vs early to mid fifties Joker.

reply

It's an elseworld type of story. It doesn't need to match up with the source material.

^ This.

Exactly @EvilPinata it was said back in June 2018 before filming had been started (in the US Fall), that this film was to be the kick-off one for the DC Dark/Black Universe.

As in:

https://screenrant.com/dc-dceu-joker-movie-dark-black/

JUN 13, 2018

DC's non-DCEU movie label will kick off with the Joaquin Phoenix Joker movie and could end up being called DC Dark or DC Black, according to a new report. The idea behind starting up a DC film sub-franchise is that it will allow room for directors to come in and make one-off DC movies that aren't beholden to the continuity of the larger DC cinematic universe. Much like DC's Elseworlds imprint does for the company's comic book division, DC Dark/Black would (in theory) open the door to more experimenting with the DC movie brand and its characters.

DC technically has six Joker movies in some stage of development right now, but the Phoenix-led film about the Clown Prince of Crime is the only one that falls under the non-DCEU banner. The Hangover trilogy and War Dogs director Todd Phillips is calling the shots on the film, which is also being produced by none other than Martin Scorsese and cowritten by Oscar-nominee Scott Silver of 8 Mile and The Fighter fame. In addition to prestigious creatives, Phillips' Joker solo film will have a much lower budget than most comic book adaptations nowadays, according to the latest report on the project and other going-ons at DC.

Not true, Joker could be as young as 35 in this movie (a bit older looking due to hard life). Bruce Wayne is abut 10. Joker was always significantly older than Batman both in the original TV series as well as in Tim Burton's Batman.

reply

dante pereira-olson was 8 years old when they shot the movie (and no, he doesn't look older for his age)
joaquin phoenix was 44 (and no, he doesn't look younger for his age)
so we got a real age difference of 36 years.
heath ledger, on the other hand, was 28 when 'the dark knight' was shot.

reply

This movie is in different continuity with The Dark Knight.

reply

yeah that has been said before, but it doesn't make sense to me. the whole point of a joker origin movie is to give the backstory of the character fans are fascinated with after having seen tdk.

reply

It makes all the sense to me. This is a Joker movie, not a Batman movie. This is also not the same character the Joker depicted in TDK. Also, not the same Joker character depicted in Suicide Squad nor Tim Burton's Batman.

It's like the Spider-Man character in Sam Raimi's movies is not the same Spider-Man in Avengers.

reply

spider man is a bad example. the spider man in avengers is tom holland from the latest reboot.

batman, however, hasn't been rebooted (yet). and arthur's joker clearly tries to resemble heath ledger's joker.

reply

This is the Joker reboot. And Arthur does not resemble Heath Ledger's Joker. Like, at all.

actors age IRL? Mother was at Arkham 30 years prior, boy in journal was 10 tops.

reply

Adam West was 38 when he was Batman while Cesar Romero as Joker was 59 so a 21 year age difference, in context Cesar as Joker was 3 years younger than Alan Napier was as Alfred.

reply

actors age IRL?

reply

Yep and if you watch the that old TV Series you'll notice that by about halfway through the 2nd season Batman (Adam West) starts to get a middle aged spread stomach and by season 3 it's quite pronounced. Still find it hilarious as well that with Cesar as Joker they just put make-up over his moustache, then again we were still in the can't do anything to violent with Joker stage or we'll upset the Parental Groups and get boycott's.

Funny how we're back in some cases to all that PC stuff, the highlight of which is Batman trying to dispose of the bomb in The Batman Movie, always has me in stitches.

reply

ages of characters don't necessarily have anything to do with the actors' ages, and vice versa

reply

at most 30 years
