Ledger or Phoenix. Pick your Joker

I thought I would never see anyone come close to the job Ledger did as The Joker in the Dark Knight Rises. But after seeing the movie, Phoenix comes pretty damn close. The background story for Joker is plausible. There are similarities between the two are there, but Phoenix plays the character just enough differently.

Its a tough question.

Phoenix was really only "full" Joker for the finale (once he got in full makeup and started dancing down the stairs).

Call it an unfair tie.

reply

I have to go Phoenix but man I really feel it's not a good comparison especially since Ledger isn't here to defend himself. I hope it wasn't his role in TDK that killed him.

reply

I always thought Ledger was over hyped and once he died it was just the thing to praise him even more and blame the Joker for his death.

I haven't seen this Joker film yet but from the trailer I do like the more serious and less cartoony rendition.

reply

Go see it. It's great.

reply

Its hard to compare they are both great but Ledger played Joker in a Batman movie while Phoenix played him in a Solo movie and isn't really Joker til the 2nd and 3rd act.

reply

I thought they were both excellent.

reply

While Phoenix did a great job in this movie, I don't consider it Joker. Ledger's Joker was exquisite (though a flawed movie) and a far better portrayal of The Clown Prince of Crime. Phoenix did an amazing job of portraying a mentally handicapped hobo who ends up snapping.

New Joker movie is decent but seriously overrated. The attention it is getting seems to be due to social hot buttons rather than the quality of the movie itself. The biggest movies lately all seem to be like this. Phenomenon-adjacent.

Why do people feel the need to compare?

Why cant you just watch the movies and enjoy them?

Whichever portrayal you prefer is your own personal choice...the best performance is the one you think it is.

Asking other people who they prefer means...absolutely nothing. What do people hope to achieve by asking this?

reply

This is a website to discuss movies. This is a topic which brings discussion.

reply

But comparison is not discussion. It's an 'either' 'or' scenario.

My point is why the need to compare? Before you even watch the movie you know Phoenix performance is going to be very different to Ledgers. Its chalk and cheese.

I just dont get this 'competition' aspect as to who is better.

reply

Do you prefer anything over anything? Who freaks out over this elemental topic on a discussion board?
Are you super sensitive about this movie?

reply

I just dont feel the need to compare. Maybe I can like both. Never got this preference thing at all...

reply

Do you like Alien more than Aliens? Del Taco more than Taco Bell?
Am I being outrageous?

reply

Alien vs Aliens...good example. Like them both equally for different reasons. Never felt the need to compare.

See how easy that is?

reply

You must be a real gem on the road when it's time to pick a place to eat.

reply

Ahhh...so you think this means inam indecisive.

Tge difference is with movies I dont have to choose which one is better.

But choosing where to eat is a choice borne out of necessity.

reply

I vastly prefer TDK over Joker, but I think the actors portrayed their film's version of The Joker equally well. Both Oscar-worthy performances.
