S5- The worst written show I've ever seen
I could write better than this in a coma. What are they doing with this crap show?! And why?
shareI could write better than this in a coma. What are they doing with this crap show?! And why?
shareI'd love to talk about some of the questionable writing this season. You're gonna have to start listing some examples.
I overall liked it, but there was some serious "are you kidding me?" moments for me.
The overall arc for the Cobra Kai dojo I thought was far fetched. The show is tap dancing between reality and full blown Van Damme.
I get you. The issue with that is that I would have to subject myself to it again. I can watch an episode and take notes then present them here I guess.
shareI hate that they built up all this tension and conflict, and teased this ultimate global dojo showdown, and it all just pissed away into a drunken raid and smackdown. Actually, now that I type that out, it seems brilliant. It's exactly what Johnny would do to mess with a strategy master. LOL He definitely never saw that coming.
shareIt's primarily the chronic misunderstandings, and these people never seem to have the ability to discuss their issues. Also everything in the world is worth fighting over. No one is aware of their own behaviors, everyone else is the bad guy.
Daniel, Silver, Johnny, Kreese et al are all cut from the same cloth. Where did all of that eastern philosophy, meditation etc get Daniel? Nowhere. Inner peace: you're doing it wrong.
I suppose to the uninitiated it might seem just fine, but if you have ever meditated, or studied eastern philosophies (the Buddha, etc) none of the behaviors or thinking patterns of Daniel would make any sense at all.
I hear that. The whole mediation aspect, the philosophy has been thrown out the window. But the show is called Cobra Kai. This show is about Daniel being consumed by the Cobra Kai element. It's not very spiritual. It's something that should be addressed moving forward.
shareThat's not how spiritualism works though, not in RL. People of fit spiritual condition do not put it on hold for a television episode. It's a lifestyle, and it does not leave them. Cobra Kai or not, Daniel should be laughing it all off and never ever taking the bait. If you're suggesting that the show simply cannot be portrayed in a manner that does not insult the viewer I would not agree.
shareDaniel doesn't get spiritualism. He's a bit thick like that.
shareIt seems they decided that in order to keep the fire going, season 5 would have to outdo the previous seasons. How does one do that? Cobra Kai is set to take over the world! For a show which started out with the old rivalries of Johnny and Daniel, it's running out of sharks to jump, and sooner or later they will have to resort to space nazis or something. It was a lot more interesting when the stakes were small, and it was more about the characters.
Besides, what was Silver's "evil plan", anyway? He really did want to help kids realise their potential. We never really got to see the destructiveness of his training philosophy, it just happened that a couple of students were pricks - and that happened under Kreese.
And then there's this super-elite karate tournament, which the writers completely forgot about after episode 8. Not even going into how silly it is for a completely unofficial dojo to qualify, it was a complete red herring. I don't know if it was even mentioned in the last two episodes, which resolved everything in a way that might as well have happened in the first half of the season.
And now Silver is in prison, and Kreese has escaped from prison. Which means any way these two antagonists can play a part in a 6th season would be illicitly. They can't run Cobra Kai now, or any other dojo for that matter. And Johnny and Daniel have made up, and Chozen is on Team Daniel as well. So just what is S6 going to be about?
Besides, I really don't think Silver would have lost the support from all of his students just because they found out Tory's win was fixed. Cheating was always part of Cobra Kai's game, and everybody knew it. And that qualifying bout, for the super-elite karate tournament thingie, had a referee who was clearly bought and paid for. When Sam was deprived of a point because Devon was out of bounds (when she clearly wasn't), Devon said nothing. When Devon got a point for a punch (or kick - don't remember) that Sam clearly blocked, Devon again had no objection. So she's going to be disillusioned by that little footage of Silver saying he had paid the judge as a collateral? I wouldn't expect any Cobra-ka to leave on that account.
Don't get me wrong, though - I don't hate S5, it certainly had its moments. But it is the weakest one by far.

She'd already effectively left Cobra Kai before any footage was shown. She literally took her place beside Tori to fight the evil sensei...
Oh sorry, I should have contextualised (it's just that I thought it was obvious):-
It was just funny because you gave her as an example, not expecting Devon to be "disillusioned" by the "little footage" and saying "I wouldn't expect any Cobra-ka to leave on that account"...
Only she'd effectively already left. So I found that an amusing thing to say.
Again, apologies. I should have explained that further initially đź‘Ť.
Oh, sorry - I didn't read your post properly. I was thinking of Tory going AWOL, necessitating Devon to fight Sam.
Yeah, Devon changed sides during that final fight with that ninja woman sensei, didn't she? A fight they didn't actually finish, now that I think about it. I was sort of expecting it to be a double-cross, but we never saw it play out either way.
Yeah, exactly. I think your point would stand with the other Cobra Kai'rs though. Didn't Kreese have some kind of win at all costs philosophy? So, yeah they should all be aware that they are "the bad guys"...
Actually I was surprised that was the uploaded footage. I really thought the Tori being refused to leave (/ held hostage) and being forced to injure herself (/ child abuse, although are they all still supposed to be kids?!!) would have been more compelling.
Just finished it. Thought it was terrific fun!
Pretty much the only thing missing was Chosen's (Daniel's ex) missus turning up at the end. She should have flown in after receiving his voice mail.
... And yes, I know there'd be literally no way she could have got the message and flown over in time but that would have made no difference. The cheese was otherwise fully flowing by that stage.
Awesome!
Nice. I really wish I could continue to watch but had to abandon an episode in the middle of it, the tab is staring at me on my computer but I cannot bring myself to do it. Glad to see some like it tho.
shareWhich episode?
That happened to me with Better Call Saul. Just couldn't take it any more in the middle of some episode in what I think was the season before the last.
Then I read everyone claiming it's some genius piece of television! Go figure..
Hmph if we lived together I suspect there would be a fight over the remote.
shareI looked- I left it at Season 5 episode 4 @ 29:04
shareTo be fair, I think that was a fairly poor episode.
Episode 5 was when the season really took off!
lol really? Maybe I should not have left before the miracle happened then.
shareWell it's maybe not a miracle. But yeah, I think episodes 3 & 4 were just meandering on a bit...
In fact maybe not even just 3 & 4 - the whole start was a bit weird with the extended Mexico trip. I was actually thinking at the time (when it was going into Episode 5) that nothing much had happened and we hadn't seen half the cast really but I do think it really strongly found it's way after that.
No spoilers - but Terry Silver is such an awesome, cartoon villain!
To me he's the hero though.
shareOK I'm watching the dang thing again. Sheesh..
shareHa - Don't blame me if you still don't like it!
But hopefully you'll see what I mean. It's like the first few episodes didn't really do anything... But I was so pumped by the cheese at the end I'd forgotten that.
Who else is there to blame? I keed I keed. It got worse before it started to get better though with Daniel throwing the first punch vs Silver.
shareYou speak as if this series was high art on par with The Godfather to begin with. I don't doubt you when say that this series has become nauseating, nonetheless this is tantamount to saying that Megan Fox has just gotten slutty these days, and pretending that she was a classy chick during her 15 minutes of fame
shareI suspect you have not read my art critique then.
shareAgreed, it just keeps getting worse.
But at least it hasn't gotten as bad as S4 of Stranger Things. At least not yet.
It wouldn't surprise me if they bring in ninjas next.
