Why does Hawk keep getting his butt kicked?

It annoys me because he is one of my favorite characters. He and his gang lose to Robbie and Sam in the mall. He loses to Miguel in the forest. I haven't watched the last two episodes, but I read he loses to Demetri! WTF?

There is a saying among the karateka - He, who strikes first, loses. It is meant metaphorically, but it is often the case in real life. Attacking first, especially when your opponent expects it, gives you a disadvantage. Not to mention the fact that none of those kids now sh.t about karate.

Well, he's not skilled, he's just aggressive and overly confident (compensating for his true self, which is a scared nerd).

He also doesn't use feints.

He also doesn't have 'instinct' or 'intuition' about the fights. His motivation is not balanced and focus-based. He doesn't really HAVE a focus, he just has aggression and madness.

He doesn't meditate, he doesn't have self-control, he only knows the physical moves, but not the inner strength. He loses to himself, so he loses to others.

Bruce Lee's "Jeet Kune Do" actually means "Intercepting Fist (or foot)".

Bruce Lee was so (self-)cultivated, focused and fast, that he was able to intercept someone before they could finish their move. This means, he never needed to strike first - but if he DID strike first, he would use common sense, and
..

USE AN ACTUAL FEINT

..so he can clear the defenses from where he wants to hit.

Hawk, like others in this show, just throw punches without any feints (which is nonsensical and illogical), so of course he loses, duh.

Lacks discipline & control. Too hot headed. I'm enjoying his evolution. Don't want to see him get too bad ass too quick. But he should definitely end up real scary.

reply

Except for Miguel and Robbie he is pretty much the best. At least until he lost to Demitri which was just ridiculous.

reply

I think we are supposed to enjoy seeing him lose.

The problem is his situation with Dimitri mirrors the original movie in that Dimitri is the antagonist just like Daniel was.

And just like with Daniel, Dimitri can't fight. So it makes you wonder why he keeps poking Hawk.

reply

I think Dimitri getting the drop on Hawk was supposed to be a feel good moment, but Hawk is right about Dimitri: He's an annoying little pussy. So when Dimitri beat him I just threw up my hands and was like, "Aw c'mon man, WTF?!"

reply

I agree with all this. They might not have intended such, but Hawk is the most sympathetic interesting character on the show.

reply

They showed that flashback with Hawk as Eli having his mother defending/humiliating him

I'm sure they intended him as sympathetic and still do. Or at least tragic

reply

Agreed.

Hawk should lose SOME of the time but he doesn't need to lose ALL of the time. Sometimes I want to see him kick someone's ass, especially that little pussy Dimitri. Within the world of Cobra Kai he's clearly been set up as one of the most formidable fighters, so to keep that reputation he has to win at least most of the time.

reply

I don't know. But him losing to Demetri made no sense to me. They showed him basically all season struggling to learn karate until he finally starts making small progress, then they don't show him training anymore and then he's able to beat Hawk? WTF?

reply

Yeah..it was hinted at that Demetri may have some potential when it comes to defense, but that's about it. No way he could've beat someone who came in third in the tournament. (I have watched the whole season now).

reply

I'm pretty sure Hawk was a more successful fighter before he started taking Karate.

reply

Because he's a villain, and the audience wants to see evil characters lose. I haven't gotten as far as him losing to Dimitri, but I hope that's a true rumor. That's kind of the point of the show, right? The kind-hearted but weak guy standing up to the sociopathic bully and winning, despite the odds being against him. That was the spirit of the original Karate Kid film, after all.

reply

LOL... one of your favorite characters is a 110-pound bed-wetting weaking with a tryhard hairdo and tattoo, who is always scrunching up his face trying to look "badass"? In reality, none of his punches or kicks would hurt; he's too small and weak. The only less believable "badasses" on the show are the chicks and the two kids who look like they are 10 years old.
