The hot dog eating contest... After Viggo gets home, he says he won and presents his wife with $50. He also pawns his watch for $50 around this same time. And he does it rather secretly (had his buddy pick it up, didn't tell wife). My buddy says he won the contest and the $50 pawn was just a coincidence. I say he lost the hot dog eating contest and had to pawn his watch to temporarily make up the $50. Who's right?

My recollection is that Tony wins the $50 and then pawns the watch, so he got both. I think he won the contest, but I could see it going your way, too.
shareHe definitely wins the contest first, presents the money to the wife and then later he pawns the watch. He pawns it right after saying no to do "things" for Augie, explaining "he is flush right now".
In my view it means he'd rather get money that way than get it the easy way by doing illegal stuff for (I assume) the mob. It also establishes the fact that he's in need for money and puts greater emphasis on the scene in the end where he's okay with Don Shirley not playing the last show under those circumstances, even if it means he's not getting paid.
