Why would that come as a surprise to you? Sequels often, perhaps more often than not, earn less than their predecessor. Avengers 2, Empire Strikes Back, Godfather 2, The Last Jedi... generally, it's unusual for a sequel to earn more than the prior film, assuming the prior film wasn't some kind of sleeper that became a cult favorite, a la Boondock Saints. This isn't a hard and fast rule, but it's certainly a common phenomenon. Except that it is? It doubled its own budget before it was released to all countries. It still has 6-7 more countries to hit in August and just reached Germany and Hungary yesterday. I think it will get to China in August as well and Marvel movies do very well over there. It was projected to make around 600 million and is on its way to doing so.

You, yourself never seem to provide any researched information on your "critiques" and "predictions" for all things Disney and more often go on what you "Want to see happen" as opposed to what you have predicted to happen based on data, or experience, or industry knowledge, or interviews or just plain old getting into a scrap with Bill Brown and being schooled.
The Motley Fool used to have contributors who weighed in on Movie Box Office performance but too often they would take both sides of a set of facts just for getting "clicks". I don't think you make your posts to be edgy or controversial. You just dislike Disney and desire to see them knocked down a peg or two which is why you so often tout other Studios positive performances but never seem to point out their poor performances.
Hughes ' article paints a more optimistic picture for Marvel's AM&TW's Box Office performance and doesn't try and slight the results by shading the production budget by suggesting, as you have, that Disney over spends just to get less than stellar results. You would make it seem that Low Budget films (Get Out) are the model and the leaders for some magical ROI. They're not. CBMs tend to have a larger budget but also yield quantitively larger results. Get Out grossed $255 Million on a $4.5 production budget not counting marketing.
Ant Man grossed $519 Million on a $130 Million budget. Get Out has the higher ROI but AM had the much higher Gross Profit. Marvel has so many other revenue streams from AM that it is no comparison as to which one a studio will pick as the model for success. Marvel/Disney doesn't have to knock anything out the park as you suggest. That is why you are suggested as throwing "Shade" at Marvel/Disney for your completely made up financial success criteria.
AM&TW is doing just fine and will be a another success for Marvel notwithstanding your own false financial success narrative.
