The Good Place is not that good

That place is so full of frustration, suffering and unhappiness I can't believe it's a Good Place at all.

Noone seems completely happy there.

That's the point.

Socialist utopias generally aren't.

better than capitalist utopias though

Much like how no religion is 100% right, there is no be-all and end-all economic system. Capitalism is good at some things, and socialism is good at some things.

In a capitalistic society each purchase is designed to be win-win. You choose what to buy, where to work. You have a choice in every transaction. You have to provide a valuable service, A service the consumer wants. You have to create a win-win situation.

Government oversight, without mass intervention is good. And the best part is, it works much much much better than socialism or communism.

Capitalize with smart goverment over-site is as close to a utopia as you are ever going to get.

What point? That being good makes people unhappy?

reply

I think the argument is that having a couple of bad apples in there is what upsets the balance. All the frustration, suffering, and unhappiness has only come from the discovery of Eleanor (and to a lesser extent, Jianyu). If she wasn't there, they'd all be wandering around in dumb boring bliss.

If there is any criticism I have of the show, and it's a small one, is that with the introduction of all the drama surrounding Eleanor they have dropped the fun visuals and concepts of the Good Place. That's pretty standard in high concept shows, and I think it's a mistake. I think they should make more of an effort to constantly remind us of the setting, it's half the fun.

The Good Place isn't very good.

Get a set of the Dead Like Me DVDs instead. Sooooooo much better. It was not only wickedly funny with better developed characters but it had an actual point.

reply

So true! That show was all this one could have been, but isn't.

Laverite, we got the message on the first post. You didn't need to re post it.

But better than the Bad Place. That's part of the humor. Have you ever seen of paintings of both Heaven and Hell with souls being sent to each (though the GP universe isn't explicitly the product of any single religion, it's close enough)?

Heaven is painted as vaguely nice, but Hell is horrifying. Especially in Bosch for both the bland niceness and the horror. Thus the typical viewer who takes it seriously wants to go to Heaven mainly to avoid Hell.

Eleanor is a female version of Phil Tandy in The Last Man on Earth, the same type of self centered lying areshile though a bit more self aware and conniving. Is this what passes for humor today?

I'm reminded of a Twilight Zone episode where a thug ends up in what he thinks is heaven (women, booze, gambling) only to be told at the end that he is really in 'the other place'. Eleanor seems the type.

You missed out the part when you said that it is YOUR OPINION. Stop wasting everyone's time!

reply

You missed saying that that is your opinion. Don't expect others to do as you say if you don't.

Because it is fact.
