They COMPLETELY botched the main villain!

Seriously? We go through the entire show with the plot revolving around the mind flayer and then all of a sudden the show takes a three year hiatus and this is the twist that they come up with?

Some low key wizard puppetmaster that they just introduced at the tail end of the show, has been manipulating a giant fucking sand spider this whole time?

How do you just sweep all of the build up of one of the coolest, most ominous bad guys under the rug by reducing it to nothing more than conjured fantasy by some psycho kid?

It felt so rushed and incoherent. No hinting of a big bad behind the mindflayer.
No subtle nods foreshadowing of a villain behind it throughout the entire series.

And then just out of nowhere, here's this new dude that we decided on making the main villain of season 4...oh and also he was secretly the bad guy this whole time since the beginning. Like they struggled to put a face to the upside down.

The upside down didn't need a face. It worked perfectly because the mindflayer HAD no motive. It was just this destructive force of nature that consumed. No different than a tornado.

This has got to be the worst retcon since all of season 8 of GOT.

Also you gotta ask yourself...why didn't Vecna kill 4 people to open the gates in season one if it was him all along?

Why did he keep Will alive and prisoner in the upside down for days?

Season 1 Demogorgons literally opened gates everywhere they attacked and snatched their victims. Coulda had as many gates open as Vecna wanted if he's in control of all the creatures in upside down.
Also, wasnt didnt upside down have toxic air requiring protective suits to travel into? Im trying to remember how Will survived w/o it but I'm drawing a blank.

You get very slowly poisoned over time. When they found Will he was nearly dead with blue lips and pale skin. Only the Hawkins lab employees wore suits. The main characters crossed to the upside-down unprotected and were fine.

Yes, I agree. Huge problem with this season because of the reveal of who the big bad is. Such a letdown. There's some really good stuff in this season, but ruined it for me with the reveal. The character of Vecna was ok. Nowhere near intimidating enough.

The finale tries to have it both ways
max is killed but El broughts her back
but the portal is still open
the guys molotov bombs seem to hurt Vecna a lot but not really
Max is in the hospital but El sees that her mind is empty.

I don't know why you care. The horror aspect of the show is lame, especially in the fourth season. It is like a fanboy hoping to write a great novel by memorizing all the words in the dictionary and then start throwing them on a white sheet.

The show is all about the nostalgia value. Nostalploitation. Not sure if that will keep me till the end of the fourth season. I watched four episodes and it is already feels a bit like a chore.
