Why is Uhtred so unrealistically STUPID and CHILDISH??

He's lucky he can fight because he has to be the DUMBEST character on the show! Every single move he makes is so obviously stupid/wrong/naive.. That scene in episode 5 where he bursts into the church to cry about how he killed ubba and no one knows/cares. Just ridiculous! He sounds like a whiney spoiled little brat! Does this moron ever think before he acts?

I can understand the first episode when he runs into battle as a child in oversized armour actually believing he could..... Idk, but he's a kid, so there's an excuse to be that stupid and naive, but he doesn't seem to grow up or learn any wisdom after that. All 8 episodes he's basically the same dumb child.

And don't get me started on all the whining about "I deserve land, gold, this and that , it's what is owed to me, it's mine, blah blah cry cry" when he's got nothing to his name, next to zero accomplishments besides being the dumbest person in the country... Just WOW he's beyond irritating!

I've never seen such a dumb protagonist.

Basically, because he's a stupid child.

I really dislike his character and the Danes. The actor's lack of charisma and acting proficiency doesn't help either. I really dislike the character, not only is he a traitor to his father and his people, he is also weak and dumb. If he was at least smart, then he could be a likable character, look at all the people who liked Tywin Lannister or Little Finger? But he isn't. When his Danish family was killed, it was the perfect opportunity and advantage they had to have their enemies think him dead. But no, he had to be idiotic.

I'm only on the second episode and I hate him already unfortunately.

flySaber,

I was very excited to watch this after reading many positive reviews. Unfortunately, the writing, direction, and acting simply wasn't there. Compare this to GOT and so many problems are immediately apparent: Odd choice of shaky camera-work in some scenes, a child actor seemingly left on his own to set the tone for his scenes such that the they lack depth and sorrow. Words that are oddly out of place such as "turd", there were others but that I heard at least three times. The actors certainly have a lot of problems but they are working with a silly script and a director who allowed or expected these childish performances. The show plays like a TV movie. It's too bad, there just isn't a great series on the vikings which have a broader and more interesting story to tell than what is being told.

What's more incredible than the clumsy script is that the reviews on IMDB are glowing.

I totally agree, actually. I really wanted to like Uthred but his character is just so damned annoying. I understand that he is supposed to be quite young, naive, and a hothead, but all those qualities combined make him very unlikeable. I could even forgive him for being naive and angsty, given his youth, if he wasn't so irritatingly smug and arrogant on top of it all.

I kept trying to enjoy his character, but the last straw for me was him falling into insta-obsession with Isealt and basically throwing away everything he had gained just because "omg she's so pretty". I really, strongly, disliked Uthred for that. Yeah, his wife was pretty annoying herself and obviously their marriage was troubled, but he just started pining for Isealt the moment he saw her, so you can't convince me that his obsession with her is all about them having some deep spiritual connection.

I don't know, I just feel like the writing in this series is very clunky and I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. Don't know if I will bother coming back for season 2.

I'm reading the book. For one thing, he spends most of the first book in his early teens which makes his stupid decisions more understandable, and second... he's not nearly as idiotic in the novel. It's actually a cringe worthy adaptation.
