How did Marcy and Paul get the infection?

I didn't see how

Paul got bit in the hand and washed it with the water, if that's when he got it he should have shown symptoms first. When he ripped off his bandage at the end, his hand was seriously bad, implying that he had it and didn't know it the whole time. The water entered his body there and so he showed different decay patterns as his girlfriend who drank water the whole time and showed symptoms first. What I don't get is why they both didn't get terribly infected from swimming in the lake. The other chic probably got infected from having sex with Paul, or she drank some water before hand. It only took her at most a few minutes to start decaying rapidly, where as Paul didn't look infected til the end of the movie. *shrugs*

Just like the original, I think the idea in this is that Marcy got sick from a cup of tea she drunk while the group had a meeting after the first dog attack. Jeff brings Marcy the tea at the start of the meeting. She doesn't drink it on camera, but we can assume that she drinks it eventually, that's how she gets sick.

In the original, Paul gets the disease from sleeping with Marcy. They made a point of telling the audience that they weren't using a condom, so it's kind of like they were point out that that's the moment where Paul catches the disease. But in this version, there's no mention of unsafe sex. It was still so spontaneous we can probably assume they didn't use a condom in this version, either, but I think this version tries to downplay the idea that she made him sick. I think the film implies that he got the disease from being dragged into the water by the burnt hobo.

It all comes down to how you see the movie. You can believe that he got sick from fighting with the hobo in the infected lake. On the other hand, you might find it hard to ignore the fact that Marcy was riddled with the disease when he did her and believe he could come away from that healthy.

I don't think the infection was in the water until the hermit jumped in the water after they set him on fire, so washing the bite with the water and swimming in the water wouldn't have affected anyone beforehand

In the beginning the dog that the hermit has was infected it was in the water before he fell in it & died !!

I figured that anybody who didn't get it from direct means (like sex, or bites, or both!) just got it inevitably from drinking the water.

I assumed that the locals know not to drink or bathe in the water. Seemed like a pretty intellectual bunch. Or maybe they're just immune to it from generations of inbreeding.

I believe that Paul did get infected in the lake through the bite on his hand like mostly everyone else is saying (on top of that, the infected guy got blood on Paul’s face as well).

As for Marcy... hard to say. A lot of people are saying it’s because she had sex with Paul and she got it because he was already infected. But since she had sex with him BEFORE he wrestled in the lake with the infected guy, I think something else got her. Plus, I don’t know if the virus can be transmitted through anything other than blood, since Paul kissed Karen after she got infected and he didn’t show any symptoms until after he was in the lake.

I have a couple of theories: possibly, Marcy drank the infected tap water offscreen, or maybe somehow ingested Karen’s blood when she and Paul moved her out of the boathouse. I have one other explanation though. When she and Paul were having sex, he left scratch marks on her back. I think that MAYBE when Paul scratched her, he could have introduced the virus into her bloodstream directly. He had just touched Karen outside, so it’s possible that some residue of her blood could have been left on his hands. This would also explain why her symptoms came on so suddenly. The others drank the infected water, so it didn’t get to their bloodstream so quickly. It had to be digested, so for Bert, Jeff, and Karen, it took some time (I’d say roughly between 8 - 24 hours for all). But if he had the virus on his hands when he scratched her, that would have gotten into her blood instantly.

But that’s just my two cents. I’m not a doctor so idk

In both versions, Marcy is seen with tea after the incident with the infected Hermit. Karen had been drinking water several times at this point, and showing some symptoms.
Though with the tea, the water is boiled - so it's possible that could have weakened the virus to some extent, we don't know.
So during this time, it can be assumed Marcy has become infected with the virus the same way as Karen.
She also came in contact with the infect Karen the following day, and could have become infected then.
The night Jeff and Bert clash, Bert is seen drinking the infected water, and shows symptoms the following morning.
With Paul, it is possible he contracted the virus from Karen when they were making out before discovering she was sick. He also could have contracted it from simply touching her infected blood, but he definitely becomes infected when he ends up in the water with the infected Hermit.
Someone mentioned Marcy may have gotten the virus when Paul scratched her back - Nope. She was already infected.
Those lines on her back are from him putting pressure there and her skin was already starting to rot.
As they didn't use a condom, it's also possible that Paul got the virus from the infected Marcy.
While Paul's moment of infection is unclear, from either making out with Karen, touching her infected blood, having sex with Marcy or from his "bath" with the infected Hermit, it's obvious that Marcy was already infected when she and Paul hook up, likely becoming infected from drinking the water (thought boiled) and/or also from handling the infected Karen.
