I believe that Paul did get infected in the lake through the bite on his hand like mostly everyone else is saying (on top of that, the infected guy got blood on Paul’s face as well).
As for Marcy... hard to say. A lot of people are saying it’s because she had sex with Paul and she got it because he was already infected. But since she had sex with him BEFORE he wrestled in the lake with the infected guy, I think something else got her. Plus, I don’t know if the virus can be transmitted through anything other than blood, since Paul kissed Karen after she got infected and he didn’t show any symptoms until after he was in the lake.
I have a couple of theories: possibly, Marcy drank the infected tap water offscreen, or maybe somehow ingested Karen’s blood when she and Paul moved her out of the boathouse. I have one other explanation though. When she and Paul were having sex, he left scratch marks on her back. I think that MAYBE when Paul scratched her, he could have introduced the virus into her bloodstream directly. He had just touched Karen outside, so it’s possible that some residue of her blood could have been left on his hands. This would also explain why her symptoms came on so suddenly. The others drank the infected water, so it didn’t get to their bloodstream so quickly. It had to be digested, so for Bert, Jeff, and Karen, it took some time (I’d say roughly between 8 - 24 hours for all). But if he had the virus on his hands when he scratched her, that would have gotten into her blood instantly.
But that’s just my two cents. I’m not a doctor so idk
