Is it just me or are these kids stupid?

It's not just you - 10 minutes into the film I was hoping they would die ASAP. It was just too painful to watch. At the 45 minute mark when the gun scene started unfolding, I was just hoping one of them would misfire and do the world a favorite.

... and then it happened! 

Innocence mixed with an overdose of stupidity, is how I saw it.

No, it's not just you. They were as stupid as heck. The remainder of this comment may contain spoilers for readers who haven't yet seen the movie! 10-year-olds have no clue how to drive an automatic car?!! They don't know how to switch on the headlights and therefore drive blind in the pitch dark at 80 mph? They don't know about the danger of guns? They've never watched cowboy movies and heard ricochets?

But the movie was riveting. All the actors were excellent, even the busybody lady, who couldn't leave well alone. But where were all the other cops? And why no helicopters out scouring the landscape?

The two boys were very stupid. I've got a son that age and I am sure he could figure out how to start the car and place the car into gear. He'd have trouble stepping on the gas and being able to see out the windshield though. I doubt he could figure out headlights while he was driving a car. While the car is parked and he can look, he'd probably figure it out.

My son's experience with firearms is limited to .22 caliber rifles under very strict supervision at Cub Scout events. The boys do things with those guns he would never do. The bullet proof vest target practice attempt was insane. Those boys seem to be from the country where it is relatively safe to wander around rural fields. You'd think they'd have some experience with rifles shooting tin cans off of a fence post.

I also think it is odd that the trunk guy didn't get the sheriff without getting shot himself.

They were pretty dumb - but it's not unheard of for kids and even adults with no mental problems to be behaving that way.

Yup, it's just you. These kids were probably much smarter than you at 10th.

reply

Yeah, These kids seem to be completely clueless on how firearms work. If they had been raised in a liberal town, where guns are vilified, sure. But the setting is in a rural area, where most kids at that age have had at least some minimal exposure to guns and how they work.

reply

Happens all the time. Kids shoot themselves in the face.. shoot their friends.. completely oblivious to the fact that guns can kill. It isn't necessarily stupidity, it's just not being mentally developed enough to predict what the consequences of their actions may be.

Whether you think it's stupidity or not, kids do this kind of *beep* every day.
