Is it just me or are these kids stupid?

They are similar to the other 48 per annum unintentional fatal shootings of and mostly by children in the US.

My f'n lord those kids were dumb. I mean, come on now. They may have been 10 or whatever but that is not normal 10 year old behavior. Every single thing they did was moronic & annoying. From beginning to end, they STILL did not catch on to anything that was happening. They barely comprehended that bad guys were present. They thought the trunk dude would just be cool & let them go because he just wanted "his" cop car. What, like he was out for a joy ride all bloody, tied up and crying??

The death and injury statistics regarding children and firearm accidents tell you that these are just regular children. Like all children they think they are indestructible and draw in the limited and inaccurate information they glean, and regarding weapons, mostly from TV : a bullet proof vest makes you bullet proof, you pull a trigger and a gun fires, a gun only fires when you pull the trigger, you get caught if you leave a fingerprint (the kids worry about the fingerprints left on a stone the throw at the car in the opening scene)

As adults we project all that we know about the world at children and expect them to know it too. They don't.

Also the film itself is exactly about that intense innocence, the tiny world of these children that they are leaving behind, where worst thing you can do is say the f-word.

They go as innocent explorers out to the big expanse around them and stumble into a pit of vipers. Like Eve in Eden they find a snake, first literally, then in the form of the sheriff who has parked his car at his very own snake pit.

You need to understand the innocence of children to understand this film.

Even the bad man in the trunk gets that the children don't understand their own mortality, so he doesn't threaten to kill them, instead to torture a Hamster - something he knows they can understand.
