Why can some roles be recast successfully, and others not?

IMHO a big part of the reason that "Solo" was a financial disappointment is that you just can't recast the role of Han Solo. Yet the bulk of the fandom seems to be perfectly happy with Ewan McGregor taking over the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi, and some (myself included) say they'd like to see more of him in the role!

I consider this to be a pretty important question, with #9 being in production and all, in which Princess Leia was originally supposed to have a large role. Could another actress take over the role, and if not, why not? Did McGregor succeed just because the original role was so small that it could easily be expanded on, or did Guinness just lack a certain magic that made him unique?

Because I think that was the case with Harrison Ford in the role of Solo, he's not a great actor but somehow he managed to be so perfect that he can't be replaced. Well, in the first two films, anyway.

It's not because the recast. Many characters had been recasted and worked fine. Many do not.

This is just a bad movie first, and an uneeded one second.

Han Solo is a character that we don't need to see his younger years. He was defined by the original movies. It's like making a movie of the younger years of Rambo or the younger years of Ellen Ripley. They have no story. Their stories only started with the first movie. Different than the younger years of, for example, Anakin. That's interesting.

I agree with one of the poster if Disney should just make a Fett movie instead of Solo. I say a movie about Darth Maul might work too.

This movie is just a bad result of many bad decissions. Nothing to do with recasting Harrison Ford.

What does everyone sein Fett that I don't? From here he never looked interesting, and yeah, I suppose he's a badass, but not enough on one to justify a film or series of films.

I'd much rather see more of MacGregor as Obi Wan, helping the Resistance or fighting Sandpeople, or just lying around naked.

At least he's more interesting than young Han Solo. I was just agreeing with another poster there. I, for one, am more into Darth Maul's backstory.

And for Obi Wan, his story is already done.
