The movie was fine. It's failing because the market is saturated with too much Star Wars.

The Star Wars concept is actually fairly limited -- it's basically good VS evil in very simplistic terms. The story was told quite succinctly in the original trilogy and things were wrapped up quite nicely.

While the prequels were flawed (though I actually liked Revenge of the Sith), George Lucas was at least smart enough to just put out a new movie every three years.

I'm sad to see "Solo" fail as it is the most fan-friendly and least "SJW" of the new Star Wars movies. I think it is suffering mostly from the backlash against "The Last Jedi" (which I did like but it was the worst of the new movies) and that I don't think the casual fans really want to see a new SW movie every single year.

If I was in charge of Disney I'd take a long view strategy of Star Wars. I'd shelve all the projects that they're talking about (Rian Johnson's trilogy, a TV series?) and just focus on making Episode IX. I'd also bring back Mark Hamill. Yeah, I know that he "disappeared" at the end of TLJ, but that could mean anything.

After Episode IX, I would pause for about 5 years before putting out any new Star Wars movie or television show. And forget about a Boba Fett movie -- the character is super cool but I doubt he can carry an entire movie by himself. I think that having an Obi Wan movie starring Ewan McGregor come out in 2025 would make a big impression.

And "Solo: A Star Wars Story" is a really bad title. The word "story" implies that it's just a throwaway tale and lacks the epic punch that these movies are supposed to be. Why not call it HAN SOLO instead?

It is a fine film but it is a franchise in serious crisis. I don't know how they will get back to robust numbers for future films.

reply

I think you're right.

SW is no longer an event. It's not guaranteed to succeed, even if the movie isn't that bad.

reply

It was awful. I've already forgotten what it was about and what happened at the end.

I do not agree there's too much Star Wars. I'm more obsessed with Star Wars than ever! This movie release was super exciting to me! I was horrified by so many things I was hearing about the movie I couldn't stop thinking about it! The casting particularly because Han Solo is very important to me. I was prepared to hate it. As a movie, it's not the worst. But it's not a Star Wars film. It reminds me of a really expensive fan fic from someone who is not a fan. I was very surprised to find I actually like Alden as an actor and that he had charisma. If he was a new character I wouldn't have minded him at all! But he's not Han Solo. And bless his heart he really tried! But Harrison Ford's Han was effortless!

I do agree about bringing Luke Skywalker back! I don't want to wait 5 years! I'm still waiting for one that's as good as the original trilogy! Although I did like Revenge of the Sith too! And Rogue One was okay.

Nice try, Kathleen.

It's failing because TLJ shat on everything, and Lucasfilm employees have been treating the fans like trash. If these were great movies, we'd be wanting more, not less. Marvel does not have this issue, because they're putting out good movies that fans like, and they clearly respect their fans.

Bullshit narrative.

Can't blame Disney. MCU movies are also Disney's and they are better than ever. People actually wants even more MCU movies! Star Wars is simply not as good as a franchise.

Star Wars is mainly an American thing, it was not that big in the rest of the world. It isn't a worldwide phenomena like MCU. Maybe it was in 1980s. Not today.

Rouge One was more succesful just because it has Donnie Yen. I think if they went to make a "Chirrut Imwe: A Star Wars Story" starring Donnieeeeeeh kungfu the shit out of Stormtroopers and end it with a sick lighsaber duel againts Darth Vader it will sell like hotcakes in Asia.

Might flop in the USA though.

lol Star Wars was and is huge in the West, not just America, people no longer care so much about it because the new movies have become as bad and poorly executed as the DCEU movies, people generally aren’t sick of Batman or Darth Vader, but they are sick of bad films associated with the brand.

As for so called Star Wars fatigue, that’s just absurd nonsense, the constant outpouring of movies and TV Shows for the Marvel Cinematic Universe proves that. They continually make crowd pleasing films for their target audience, Disney Star Wars doesn’t.

This just hits to close to home.

I fucking nerdgasmed when Tony activated his Nano Iron man suit, when Cap was showed up behind a train, when Thor teleported with Rocket and Groot in the last battle wielding his new Stormbreaker.

SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY, MCU!!!

They really care about us fans.

Disney didn't pay $4 billion to produce a "just fine" SW movie.
You gotta be outta your goddamn mind.

Maybe, although it doesn't explain why Marvel isn't seeing the same thing. Sure lots of people are tired of hero films but not like this. Marvel fans would probably watch a film about a jobbies journey from the toilet bowl to the sea if they stuck a cape on it.

One thing I've seen though is that Marvel comics are hurting because they shoehorned SJ into it and sales are slumping as a result. The common denominator here is the SJ guff they're forcing in that only a small minority actually cares about or wants.

I may be wrong but that's my take on it.

You are absolutely correct, SJW's infect and then destroy anything they get their hands on. Then they move onto the next target.
