Grand Moff Tarkin: His face was completely cringe worthy.

His face = LOL. It was totally fake and looked absolutely ridiculous. I couldn't even take any scene he was in seriously. Peter Cushing must be spinning in his grave right now. 😰

reply

I thought it looked pretty great...Leia on the other hand...terrible.

reply

Leia's balloon face was still better than his. He looked half porcelain statue face, half hilarious kids movie animation.

reply

Yeah this.

If I hadn't known who Peter Cushing was and that he died donkeys years ago I'd have been fooled.

But the Carrie Fisher thing was dreadful.

reply

If, by cringe worthy, you mean eerie as they nearly identically replicated a person who has been dead for decades... Yes then, you are correct.

No movie has ever done a better job. Not even close.

reply

If by person, you mean half functional robot who had a stroke, then yeah they did a phenomenal job replicating him.

reply

I agree they did a good job but the gold standard remains The Social Network imo, still the only movie I've seen that used the technique where I had no effing clue they used it lol, even after multiple viewings I never noticed until I saw Fincher talking about in some interview.

reply

Not even close to the same technique.

reply

Digital face replacement? They did it in Tron, Terminator, and Benjamin Button as well...

reply

Wouldn't say cringeworthy but definitely an unnecessary addition..

Tron Legacy, thank you very much.

Why are you here if you haven't seen the movie yet?

reply

Terminator Genisys was pretty damned close.

Clowns agree with clowns. ^

reply

It only looked poor when they had Tarkin in the same shot as another human. That made it obvious. The closeups however were marvelous

reply

I actually thought he looked a lot better when other people were in the scene. When it was just him I thought I was watching a purely CGI movie.

reply

Correct but he still looked terrible either way.

reply

Peter Cushing is dead. What do you expect them to do, hire a look-a-like who more than likely can't act worth a damn.

reply

I think the dude who plays Tywin Lannister on Game of Thrones could have pulled it off better than the creepy cgi guy

reply

^^^ This!!! I agree, johnnyvongriz. I think they look enough alike for it to work, plus he's a good actor, so he could've pulled it off well.

reply

I don't know who that is cause I don't watch that terrible show.

reply

Using Peter was a great idea. As its a talking point everyone has an opinion on it. Yes it was great Peter was resurrected. Cgi was at least as good as dinosaurs in Jurassic park films.

reply

In the end opinions on this don't matter.

Fact: Grand Moff Tarkin looked ridiculous.

While it's 'neat' that they can almost digitally create a convincing human face, i think they should have just had a fully human actor. i mean it's probably no different to wearing a full-face prosthetic, but I guess they were too busy to see if they could do it (not whether they should)

This guy gets it.

reply

to be honest, CGI Tarkin and Leia were really good, but they were unnecessary

You said it yourself pal, we're the guardians of the galaxy!

lol so you're okay with a terrible cartoon character being in a live action movie?

Fanboy "standards".

reply

Honestly, I did not fully realize he was an old character. I didn't even notice he was CGI.

Ten years ago all FX houses including ILM were still struggling with smoke, water and fire CGI effects. Now, they've pretty much got those nailed. Grand Mof Tarkin and Leia were not the best efforts -- they could've used another month of processing -- but we've come really far, and I have to say they were still pretty impressive. In another five years, once the facial textures, reflections of light and gestures are figured out, they'll be able to recreate anyone living or dead with at least 97% accuracy.

well, just about as fake as that other character in the Force Awakens. It
was kind of amusing.

They did nail down Princess Leia really well though (ok, maybe I need better glasses but she wasn't on the screen that long). Certainly didn't look as awful as Grand Moff.

reply

Yes she did look better but still weird, way better than Tarkin so you are correct.

reply

Unfortunately, his face in scenes really took me out of the moment each time.

I much would've preferred if they got someone who looked even a little bit like him and called him Tarkin. I can get past characters that aren't played by the exact same looking person but I can't stand horrible CGI looking faces.

reply

It was pretty amazing they were able to CGI his face so well, as well as Princess Leia, and some of the Rebel Pilots who found themselves reused from 1977 in 2016. Very impressive.

reply

Fanboy standards are so low with anything Star Wars they will praise anything ridiculous, laughable, or terrible. Good job guys, Disney will continue to *beep* all over the franchise cause you clowns will accept anything.

SMH

reply

It's hardly the end of the world though.

reply

It'll be the end of Star Wars. Disney will kill it cause fanboys enable this nonsense.

reply

It's nice to see that you respect other people's opinion ... It's also nice to see that you're not being patronizing towards those who like CGI-Tarkin.

... oh ... wait

reply

Nobody likes cgi Tarkin. Just cause fanboys lie and claim he didn't look ridiculous doesn't mean they actually like him.

reply

Maybe one day you will grow up and learn to accept the fact that people don't like the same things. We live in a world of diversity, and that's positive - not negative, as YOU seem to think.

In some people's ears singers like Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson might also sound terrible, especially when compared to other singers with more clean voices and a larger range. But fact is that many like Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson.

So that YOU don't like a specific thing, doesn't make your opinion a universal truth.

reply

Just cause you're butt hurt by the truth doesn't change facts, cupcake.

CGI Tarkin looks terrible.

reply

You're the one who seems all butt hurt. Hey it's okay. You're allowed to have your own opinions. Better now, buttercup?

reply

Here's another one butt hurt by facts. lol kids.

reply

The rebel pilots weren't CGI, it was reused footage from the original movie with additional dialogue performed by someone else.
