Disappointing lack of female characters

The movie itself was okay, but I was especially disappointed that there were barely any women in the film, and they hardly got to interact with each other. Out of the entire Rebellion only a small handful of women are there? And it was also disappointing how Jyn was the only woman in her group and didn't get to recruit other women to be part of it. Nor did she get to have any female friends. It's funny to me how the makers of the film claim it to be a feminist film because of having a female lead and yet a lack of female characters never crossed their mind that they actually failed in that aspect. I and many other people were hoping that with a film like The Force Awakens, which was a HUGE step in the right direction, that they would continue to do so with these anthology films, but they utterly failed.

Now I'm sure some of you will complain about this post for any reason, but considering the fact that since the beginning of time, women have been seen as less than men and have continued to be underrepresented in film and tv and other forms of media time and time again, it's hard not to be disappointed and depressed.

Did you just assume the gender of everyone in Jyn's group?

"it's hard not to be disappointed and depressed"

For you, I couldn't care less. If anything, this movie was lacking aliens and droids.

look at actual armed rebellions from around the world... women are the rare exception, both in leadership and in participation...

Sure... Star Wars is fantasy so they can do as they wish, so I do see your point... but don't bd depressed, women have never had so much representation and power... they're getting their, things are improving...

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I think that in a society where all sex-based barriers are removed, you'll still find more human males than human females in any military setting or a setting where violence can be expected to happen.

But the thing is, we don't actually know whether all sex-based barriers have been removed from the Star Wars universe.

Kathleen Kennedy , is that you ? more woman in this film than any other , the OT didnt have many , why do we need additional female characters?

What an odd rant. First of all, like someone else pointed out, there are no fewer women here than there were in Force Awakens. Second, like Force Awakens, the lead is female. Third, yes, we only get to see a handful of women, but there are also only a handful of men with speaking parts. Third, you could only possibly notice a general lack of women if you were counting in the first place. And that's no way to enjoy a movie.

Would you have preferred the ratio to have been around 50/50 instead? That would have been noticeable, because it would go against everyone's expectations - and not in a good way. It would have felt forced, and frankly I don't understand why you wouldn't have seen that as patronising. Because you would absolutely have known that that would have been a deliberate decision, and not a coincidence.
