Sure, the all package wasn't very good, but Parallel Monsters was top notch. The creepy satanic sexual bit and these scene playing on the TV (the crucified body burning) was so freaking weird. Unfortunatly, it deserved to be in a better antologie.
I thought it was a huge wasted potential. Why take the silliest and laziest route for such an interesting idea (I'm talking about parallel universe stuff, not monster penises and vaginas, that was simply too stupid).
i TOTALLY agree. monster penises and vaginas ruined this segment.
Maybe it should have been like this: in real world, alfonso and marta are very good people. whereas in the parallel world, these two are psychopathic satanic weirdos, killing people with rituals. Then, parallel alfonso and marta would kill real alfonso and marta with torture, etc etc etc
the thing is if it's a truly parallel universe, it can't just be the two main characters that are different, it has to be the entire universe. I found it quite interesting that they're saying everyone is a Satanist. That God is Satan and the world is evil and that's why they have vagina and penis monsters. Remember that all Christian-horror/satanist movies portray Satan as a hands-on fella, whereas God simply waits in the background for someone to use the Bible correctly or whatever. Any world that Satan would be in charge of would be pretty friggin interesting because he likes chaos, right? It makes perfect sense for everyone to be part demon.
Everything else in VHS was the absolute worst horror I've ever seen. Just garbage. But the parallel universe story was excellent. Really creeped me out.
I viewed it sorta like you did. In my opinion it was a world in which Satan had in fact found a way to overthrow God. After the Garden of Eden he got to take over and it's no surprise that humans were left to be his subjects and he would "alter" them accordingly.
exactly, the premise itself was actually pretty cool, but then they went the laziest GD route they couldve taken. which is what i felt like they did with the entire movie.
When that cartoon blimp flew by thats when it lost me. This movie forgot or had no idea what the other VHS movies were like. They had this gritty realism to themm so much that you almost believed they were real and thats what made it scary. This segmet was cool in a twilight zzone episode kinda way but it wasn't VHS quality.
Honestly, the blimp part scared the crap out of me. Yeah, the use of neon purple/pink lights was cheesy, but the upside down cross and chanted speech were creepy as hell. Were they actually saying anything, or was it just gibberish? Every other part of this segment had English subtitles, but this didn't.

The blimp part was scary as hell. Seeing that blimp let us know this wasn't just some crazy household he was in. This whole planet was crazy. Whatever he was dealing with was huge and he wasn't prepared for it.
It was very good. And it would seem a lot of people thought the same so I don't get why this film is rated so low. It's deserves a 6 for that segment alone. And there was only 3 segments so, surely 1/3 warrants a better rating than 4.6. I swear people are making up accounts just to give this a 1/10.
My sentiments are the same as most people's it seems, the intro was good, really interesting and definitely drew me in and got me excited to find out what it was all about...and then monster penises and vaginas. =/
My favorite segment as well. I didn't enjoy the monster penis but I did enjoy the monster van, with more tinkering it could have been spectacular. I don't get why people hate the demon genitals so much. I guess because people here in the normal universe don't have "angel genitals?" That can be argued though.
