You pretty much said it. It's your subjectivity. Everyone experiences things differently and we all perceive what's in a movie in a way that is unique to each of us. It has a lot to do with our personalities and how we take things in. For example, when I watch a movie I tend to notice more than anything else the cinematography, soundtrack, setting, costumes etc, essentially everything that brings a film to life. It's why I'm a big fan of epics such as Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven, despite those films receiving negative responses by many critics due to the simplistic and cliche storylines.
I'm not a hard core Tarantino fan by any shot, but I generally enjoy his films and will always watch a new release out of interest. I was initially going to skip on Hateful Eight because the trailer did nothing for me but I eventually succumbed when I saw a "buy 2 get 1 free" movie deal at the local store. I watched the film last night and aside from some of the confrontational violence (like Russel's character hitting the woman) I found it surprisingly good. Obviously Tarantino's movies aren't for everyone; they seem to focus mostly on characterisation and setting than your average Hollywoodised fast paced action flick everyone these days seems tolove. His films also take their time and at almost three hours long I can see why people would grow bored, but I felt there was always enough happening to maintain your interest throughout.
After seeing Hateful Eight, I can fully re-affirm that Tarantino is a deadset genius when it comes to characters, dialogue and bringing a large cast together in a series of complex and intriguing plots. Few others do this so well. I also love his attention to detail and his willingness to sit down and showcase the scenery and expressions on characters faces. You can tell he grew up watching Sergio Leone films. :)
I personally rate this film a 7. I try to have a fairly objective guideline in which a 6 means an enjoyable yet average film, a 7 for a good film, an 8 for an excellent film, and anything above is usually reserved for what I deem to be masterpieces or even simply personal favourites (Papillon, Great Escape, Thin Red Line etc). The only films I've rated a 10 were Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke (Japanese animes) and the Shawshank Redemption.
