Depp killed this movie

It's been a while since I've seen a film sabotage itself this badly. I think Smith must have a fear of success. For the first hour he seems to be trying to prove to his critics that he's a legitimate filmmaker, working hard to show he can take a ridiculous concept and make it credible. His script starts off with what seems to be a sincere effort to keep things from being overly silly and stupid, balancing the humor and absurdity with actual drama and genuinely unsettling horror. Michael Parks is amazing as he transforms onscreen from an enigmatic oddball into a legitimately frightening lunatic with a unique backstory, all the while gleefully spouting creatively deranged dialogue. The acting, the directing and cinematography, even the orchestrated 'Tusk' drum beat in the soundtrack, are all effective at building suspense. I was really getting into the film.

And then, suddenly, just as the story starts to get really interesting and the horror and suspense are reaching surreal levels, BANG! Depp appears out of nowhere playing Inspector Clouseau's retarded brother and the whole thing turns into a campy screwball comedy. Seriously, wtf? I get that Depp is a huge star and Smith was probably reluctant to tell him that his performance was all wrong, but it's almost as if Smith decided that since he couldn't change what Depp was doing, he might as well change the rest of the movie to match. So the camerawork changes and we start getting all kinds of campy gimmicks like Tarantino quick-zooms, the music changes from dramatic drums to accordians and Fleetwood Mac songs, and even Michael Parks, who up until that point has been carrying the film with his amazingly sinister performance, suddenly becomes comic relief as Smith pits him against Depp in a bizarre and unfunny battle of the screwballs. By the time the idiotic ending comes along, the film has managed to piss away everything it achieved during the first hour. Really unbelievable.

You left out a word in your title, so I fixed it. You're welcome! 

Wishful thinking, friend -- ah, if only Depp HAD been killed in this movie, preferably before speaking his first line.

indeed, I enjoyed this quite a bit till Depp turns up and rambles on/ takes a crap on the movie.

Agreed. It started off terrible until Long and Parks met, then it was fantastic. Justin Long was a revelation. I was hooked. Then Depp came in and all of that built up tension disappeared, and the horror was gone. I think it still had its moments after that, but never fulfilled its potential.

reply

Agreed. Once the cop showed up the acting and pace went to crap. I kept saying that is a really bad Depp wannabe doing a bad French imitation and it actually was Depp, lol. Was a bad idea but Smith gets carried away at times. Is a shame though really because Parks was fantastic and so was the first half.

Nothing is as it seems so I wouldn't judge by what you think you see.

First, that was Johnny Depp??????

Secondly, I am not of the faction that Johnny Depp killed this movie, but I must say that Johnny Depp did cause this film to come to a dead stop whenever his character came on screen. That did bother me a little. In my opinion, we really didn't need his retelling of his encounter with a person he thought was Howe. It was a bad attempt at comedy at the wrong place at the wrong time compared to the footage of "The Kill Bill Kid" slicing his leg off, which was shockingly hilarious but needed in order to get the film's storyline going.

Although it did take a little time for the film to get going again after Depp's appearance, I'm actually willing to overlook his performance in a film which was one of the enjoyable films I've seen lately.

I just finished this movie and I felt the exact way the original poster did, except I had no clue what character was played by Depp. Who would have thought he was the one actor I thought was the worst. Then the film suddenly went to hell the last 10-20 minutes. It just seemed rushed and poorly written.

reply

You're not alone. The movie had me engaged up until Depp showed up. The movie spends more than enough time on his scenes that you can't help but feel Smith knew he had a somewhat mainstream actor playing a bizarre character (who'd of thought?) and didn't know when to say cut or, at the very least, trim his scenes down in the editing room. They went on forever it seemed, maybe because it felt like torture. Then the back-and-forth with Parks and Depp couldn't have been more misplaced and over the top. It made me laugh (awkwardly) though, so mission accomplished since this is a dark comedy...

I felt Depp changed it as well, he brought a lot of good *beep* to the film but the Kind of acting just made it feel ridiculous.. more so than the whole plot did (well less goofy, more creepy)..

1st want to give props to the OP for this thread bec you nailed it on the head.

Now that doesn't mean I didn't like the movie or thought Depp was at fault cuz it wasn't , he did a great job as he always does with odd ball eccentric characters like J Sparrow. Depp stinks with normal roles where he has to be a normal person like in Public Enemy,..omg what a snooze fest .

Ok back to Tusk,..I Effin loved it. It was so original & out there yet it kept me stimulated for most of the movie until Depp came in & tuned it on its head but that's ok.

Kevin smith hit a home run finally after what,...20+ yrs after clerks & chasing Amy. Tusk was nothing like them, but it was def had Kevin's signature all over it that only he can. Just like QT did with Djanjo,..just pure brilliance.

this movie is one of the worst of its year.

Man oh man, I couldn't have said it better myself. You simply nailed it.

What in the name of anything holy were they thinking? For the life of me, I could have never imagined after the first hour that the movie will implode that way.

Depp has just gotta be as retarded as the character he played to actually believe what he did was any form of legit. "Inspector Clouseau's retarded brother"... wow, really, they actually did it. Not only that, why make a Québécois cop look like Clouseau, who's from France... I still can't believe this self inflicted implosion.

You're exactly right, it was going along the same path as something like the Human Centipede. Ridiculous, yes, but with a B-Movie kitschness. Horror, with a dark sense of humour, but horror nonetheless.

Unbelievable indeed.

Every person in this thread who is dumping on Smith because of his choices in this film are doing exactly what he wanted you to do...TALK about the film. So, while you nerds are masturbating all over each other about how clever you are to know what Smith is all about and what film is all about and what this film is or is not, what it does and does not do, what it should have been, and actually was...you're just fulfilling the goal Smith had all along: MAKE A FILM THAT PEOPLE WILL TALK ABOUT. Three pages of goofiness. And Smith is likely laughing his rich ass off at your buffoonery. :P
