Depp killed this movie

It's been a while since I've seen a film sabotage itself this badly. I think Smith must have a fear of success. For the first hour he seems to be trying to prove to his critics that he's a legitimate filmmaker, working hard to show he can take a ridiculous concept and make it credible. His script starts off with what seems to be a sincere effort to keep things from being overly silly and stupid, balancing the humor and absurdity with actual drama and genuinely unsettling horror. Michael Parks is amazing as he transforms onscreen from an enigmatic oddball into a legitimately frightening lunatic with a unique backstory, all the while gleefully spouting creatively deranged dialogue. The acting, the directing and cinematography, even the orchestrated 'Tusk' drum beat in the soundtrack, are all effective at building suspense. I was really getting into the film.

And then, suddenly, just as the story starts to get really interesting and the horror and suspense are reaching surreal levels, BANG! Depp appears out of nowhere playing Inspector Clouseau's retarded brother and the whole thing turns into a campy screwball comedy. Seriously, wtf? I get that Depp is a huge star and Smith was probably reluctant to tell him that his performance was all wrong, but it's almost as if Smith decided that since he couldn't change what Depp was doing, he might as well change the rest of the movie to match. So the camerawork changes and we start getting all kinds of campy gimmicks like Tarantino quick-zooms, the music changes from dramatic drums to accordians and Fleetwood Mac songs, and even Michael Parks, who up until that point has been carrying the film with his amazingly sinister performance, suddenly becomes comic relief as Smith pits him against Depp in a bizarre and unfunny battle of the screwballs. By the time the idiotic ending comes along, the film has managed to piss away everything it achieved during the first hour. Really unbelievable.

Obvious and obsessed fanboy or girl getting overly sensitive about an actor they aren't even close to. I can't stand whiny fans like you who get soooo upset about trivial things like an opinion of an actor.

What about whiny little idiots who whine about other people, like you?

That's not the case, at all. I'm sorry you didn't get it, or like it.

then please explain what the case was?

Uh, yes, if you want anyone to agree with you. You can't just say "You don't get it" and not explain what there is to get. Otherwise you look like a pretentious douche. It's two paragraphs...

Please explain how Smith didn't adapt the rest of the movie after Depp's performance, is what the question turns around.

reply

Thanks. My memory is horrible and I don't care about this topic or argument or whatever enough to re read everything about it. Ummm, well I'd like to hear any of you explain (or prove) that Kevin Smith DID adapt the rest of the movie after Depps performance. That just sounds pretty stupid to me.

But I disagreed to begin with because I looked at it like thats what Kevin was going for from the start. Horror and comedy mixed in one. He is a COMEDY writer/director after all. So you thinking the comedy was in there JUST BECAUSE of Depps performance seems stupid to me. Now if Kevin Smith never made a comedy I could see where you're coming from. But when I saw the first trailer I figured "ok cool. lets see what Kevin can do with a comedy/horror flick. because he dropped the ball on Red State"

So I disagree because I always thought there would be comedy in it to begin with. Its pretty easy to know what type of movie you're about to watch before you watch it. This was a Kevin Smith movie.

Now if you guys show me an interview, or one of his podcasts, or the commentary track whenever the blu ray comes out, of him saying HE DID in fact do that, well then that's on me. I'm not a huge KSmith fan nowadays. Still love him and his work, but I don't keep up with all his interviews, twitter thoughts, and I've never really listened to his many podcasts.

I didn't think smith made this movie with all seriousness of a horror movie. Come on, a man-walrus? The subject is just hilarious no matter how horrific the surgeries he's been subjected to. Depp was on par with the movie. I'd definitely not classify any point of this movie as "horror and suspense reaching surreal levels". It's like the human centipede movie. I couldn't take it seriously even if I tried. That whole food digested and turn into feces getting passed on to the last person, no matter how terrible it sounds, was just ridiculous and I couldn't take it seriously.

reply

This was pretty much how I experienced the movie as well... first part amazing buildup.. then he became a walrus and the movie just took off into cucu-land..

reply

While I enjoyed Depp's performance, I agree the first half & second half are two completely different things. It's like two movies in one. It's like Smith realized the prosthetic walrus would never work in a serious context so he made the second half over-the-top comical to level it out.

reply

Where did you guys ever get the idea that Smith was ever setting out to make a serious movie? The whole thing started as a joke on his own podcast (you can here a portion of it at the end of the movie). The whole joke was that they were going to start out with this dramatic setup and it would continuously become more and more ridiculous as it went on.

reply

I listened to the podcast months ago and that's not what they came up with. They basically spent the show laughing about how each plot reveal would be more and more shocking and insane. They were NOT talking about doing a bait-and-switch where they would have a legit horror setup and then suddenly turn it into a zany comedy.

But the more important thing is that the podcast is irrelevant. This is a standalone movie and the fact is that Smith starts it off as a darkly humorous horror story, and then suddenly brings Depp in and turns it into a screwball farce in the third act.

reply

I watched this piece of crap out of curiosity. Gotta say the first hour wasn't terrible but that second half was absolutely horrible. Kevin Smith is laughing all the way to the bank at every single person who paid for this garbage. Thank you internet for making sure I wouldn't have to pay a dime. Kevin Smith was at one point a decent independent filmmaker. Now he's just making movies that come from fantasies he has while he's high.

reply

you are so funny

not much to laugh for him when you look at the BO numbers 

totally agreed, the movies goes downhill quick at about the halfway mark, andDepp was solid n funny but the character ruined the movie

reply

I thought entirely the opposite. I liked both acts, but fundamentally would've preferred not seeing as much of Long in the walrus suit and MUCH MUCH MORE of Guy LaPointe and the magical Canadiana-pastiche world. I think the flashbacks worked.

Actually, I think everything worked in the movie except the torture scenes themselves.

In any case, it's definitely one of the most bizarre movies I've ever seen. Can't quite pin it down into any generic or other category.

If it doesn't become some sort of cult classic or midnight movie, there is no justice in the world. Because the insanity of the thing is more than it being some sort of self-conscious midnight movie. It actually has some of the "what the flying *beep*?" "I don't know what this is but I'm glad it exists" quality of genuine midnight movie classics.

It's its own thing. When even arthouse flicks (and, for that matter, low-budget horror flicks) all seem like vague copies of one another, that's worth saluting.

reply

I felt exactly the same. Guy LaPointe was awesome. I also agree about the torture scenes. Actually, it would have been so much better if the walrus part was toned down significantly.

reply

I also agree, Depp is nowhere turning this movie into crap, he's good in this. This movie is not for everyone, but I enjoyed this movie.

reply

wow people with taste as horrible as yours exist. mind boggling.

Yeah, Depp is definitely becoming a joke.

i agree WTF was that! i know this movie was cooked up during one of smiths podcasts and it was kinda mocking human centipede but i actually though it was a way better movie and then comes along depp in this cartoonish character that completely takes me out of the movie

reply

Ive only just realised that was Johnny Depp. WTF!

I thought it was WAAAY over the top and did seem smith just let him roll with it. He'd have been more believable if it were not for the joke shop disguise he was wearing.

I also thought that in the flashback he was cooky but believably so and a good character but the rest of the time it was a little bit too much.

Agree with you 100% magic.

"keep things from being overly silly and stupid"? Wasn't the story set in motion by a youtube video of a kid who accidentally cut off his own leg with a samurai sword?

reply

Yes, and then we learn the kid committed suicide because people were laughing at him. See? Dark humor mixed with a serious underlying theme. That's the tone Smith sets for the first half.

Then comes Depp.

reply

Then comes Depp.

And makes it better.

I know right! I didn't even know Depp was in this film, and knew the character was going to be played by someone great when the police officer built him up. I got to admit, at first, when he was first revealed and still had his sun glasses on, I thought it was Val Kilmer. And I was like, "Oh cool, Val Kilmer! Though it looks like he has a different nose." Then he takes off the glasses and I'm like, "Wait, that's Johnny Depp! Isn't it?" It was fun to see him in this. I knew one of the girls in the store was his daughter and the other Smith's, but I had no clue he was in this movie and he's one of my favorite actors of all time. He is a genius and you can clearly tell the people who became aware of him because of POTC and think he only does one character and the rest of us who've known him since the 80's and known he is one of the greatest actors of all time.
