I'm not exaggerating, but I am a lifelong horror movie fan, and have gotten to the point were I've seen damn near every horror movie worth seeing. This movie is one of the scariest I've ever seen. Several movies have great parts that make you remember them, ie. the demon over the shoulder in Insidious, the thing behind the door in The Conjuring, the footprints in Paranormal Activity, as well as the woman getting dragged out of bed.
However this movie is FULL of these moments, too many to name. The atmosphere was PERFECT. I genuinely had a bit of trouble sleeping afterwards. Hasn't happened in years! I'm fanboying out because I always go into horror movies expecting this level of enjoyment and am almost always let down.
Don't let the cheesy box art deter you, this is a winner.
ONE OF the scariest. The Exorcist still holds the top spot for me. Watched that movie home alone in my room in the dark when I was about 16, Couldn't sleep in my own room after that for about a week.
In no particular order and just off the top of my head:
Paranormal Activity 1 The Descent 1 Insidious 1 The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre
An upcoming movie that looks like it would be worthwhile is a Turkish movie Called 'Baskin' One of the first after dark, 8 horror films to die for...A movie called Abandoned. Very odd, but worth the watch in my opinon. Couple more foreign movies that were worth the watch... A french movie called Livid... Another french movie called 'ils' (or them), and a Swiss film called sennentuntschi. I dont know what sub genre your after but a few of these should be obscure enough to give you pleasure!
The Devils Backbone is spooky, and a good story, too. It's foreign with subs, that puts some people off and it's a shame, as world cinema has some amazing stuff to offer.
A good rule of thumb is: If there is a western remake of a horror, DON'T WATCH IT, and seek out the original instead!
Scary? Atmospheric? I guess I watched the wrong film. I really hated this film, the lead actress was pretty weak and she was mostly brought down by the horrendous script. I love how it took like the 13th weird occurrence and then she thought that someone was messing with her, not sooner but after all of these impossible occurrences happened. I also hated how the film couldn't even create it's own cult, the cult was such a rip off of The Manson Family. If you want to see a great thriller involving a possible cult, watch The Invitation. The practical effects were greatly appreciated though and were executed quite well. However, the use of lame jump scares and scenes ripped out of Poltergeist and A Nightmare on Elm Street ruined any suspense.
The twist was also horribly executed, could have possibly worked if fleshed out but it felt tacked on. It really boggles my mind that modern horror flicks like this, Southbound, Sinister, V/H/S, etc. get praise, they're horrendous. It bothers me that those films get the pass from critics but even other recent horror films like 30 Days of Night and The Mist or 90s horror like The Exorcist 3 and Event Horizon got poorer reviews. This film sucked...just my opinion.
Personally love VHS, all three were good, but I do remember a particular short in (the first?) where there is the cult of devil worshipers who all kill themselves at the same time... Holy *beep* what happens next...
That being said I also LOVED The Mist, and event Horizon. I honestly couldn't finish The Exorcist 3, kept falling asleep on two separate viewings.
I did watch The Invitation a couple weeks ago. Just amazing. Thumbs up.
As far as The Last Shift and the main character not catching on quickly, there's certainly a level of disbelief that needs to be addressed. We KNEW something was messing with her because it is a horror movie. A lot of adults would not jump to that conclusion right away. Hell some people could stand directly in front of the devil after he appears out of thin air, he could introduce himself, recount your deepest secrets, bitch-slap you, then levitate away and they still wouldn't believe anything supernatural just happened. Some folks just won't accept things.
Yes the ending was not great, but by that point I had enjoyed so much of the movie that even if they pulled off masks and in true Scooby Doo fashion it turned out to be Ol' Willy the janitor the whole time I still would not have cared. It was the journey to that moment that I enjoyed so much.
I can see what you're saying but I can only handle so much disbelief from a character. I don't even think it was the way the character was written but is the fault of the weak acting job from the lead. The segment you describe is from the first V/H/S and was probably the best story even though I didn't care for it. I did really like the second though, I honestly thought the third was one of the worst films ever made. I love Exorcist 3, I really do but I really dig slow burn horrors that focuse on characters and are simply, powerful in terms of emotion. The Mist and The Invitation did that great as well.
It seems like I'm in the minority with a lot of recent horror films, there are very few I like and most that I like are either interchangeable in genre or unknown.
I honestly didn't find this one to be particularly scary. Effective, but not scary. The setting was great, and the first hour built up a rather tense and spooky atmosphere, but once the mystery started to unravel and she was having visions every other second it lost a lot of its tension. Still definitely worth seeing, and that cover art truly does it no favors (I imagine many have passed on it because of it alone).
