Sophie Thatcher's character (spoilers)

Sister Barnes was far more successful converting people to Mormonism than Sister Paxton. I think she converted 9 ppl as stated. So, would it be safe to assume she was sleeping with guys to convert them? Maybe not all, but some. It would serve the time-old horror trope of the sexually active girl dying. Sister Paxton was more of a "final girl" which is why I think she survives.

I didn't pick up on that but it's an interesting thought and could be the case. I definitely need to watch this one again.

reply

No, how would that even work?
That's your horny, sex deprived brain talking.

reply

Maybe. I'm not saying it was sanctioned by the church like they were pimping her out. The church wouldn't like her being on bc. But how effective could it be going door to door and having a 20 yo convert someone? How likely?

I could imagine a scenario where she slept with guys because she wanted to and as a by-product converted some of them. Made them see/feel God. She got very defensive when Hugh Grant pushed her on Mormon historical polygamy. Almost like she was being personally slut shamed. Yes, Sophie Thatcher is very attractive but this isn't a thirst post it's a legit theory.

i dunno but both these church bitches were so hot. thats what made this movie so good, plus hugh grant's acting

remember the beginning they were both basically admitted porn addicts

but your fanfiction stretches the limit by a couple of miles

With respect, this is an absurd assumption. There is no indication given in the film that Sister Barnes was fucking men or women to convert them, if anything she was more confident that Sister Paxton, and confidence is what people are looking for when seeking guidance, wisdom, insight, leadership, what have you, from someone.

And the premise of having attractive young mormon girls go door to door is legit, it’s happened to me and yes it caught me completely off guard, and yes they were innocently flirtatious as well. People are always looking for something, to be a part of something, and what better way than to use attractive young girls as a way of potentially bringing people, especially men, into the fold of something new.

To each their own, but but I do consider this tactic to be incredibly manipulative as well as contrived but again, most of us have the benefit of free will so what ever floats your boat.

You make a good point about her confidence. Perhaps I should have worded my OP differently. I don't think she was deliberately using sex to convert people. I think she had private consensual relationships and as a by-product may have converted one or two. How could a 20 yo woman convince 9 ppl to make such a life altering decision? I mean maybe if she targeted desperate populations (ie homeless) and somehow made that work (the church would still have to approve them). I have trouble understanding how she converted so many ppl.

A great many people are weak willed and need someone to take them by the hand and show them the way, to something, anything, especially if they find a sense of welcomed community with whatever they’re lead to.
