This is the most heinous, pile of bullsh!t I've read all day. "Everyone is flocking to make these movies because they are highly rated...?" What planet are you on? How many "black movies" are actually made in a given year compared to the rest of the movies produced out of Hollywood? Four or five--in a good year. And even then, it's a struggle to get them made. I don't where you got this notion that producers are falling all over themselves to make black themed films, but you are totally out to lunch with that idea. It's just the opposite.
Red Tails, for instance ONLY got made because George Lucas funded the project himself. NO other producer wanted to be a part of it. The film tells the story about a basically unknown part of American history, but since it featured a predominantly black cast, everyone said no. Even 12 Years A Slave needed Brad Pitt in order to be produced. If he had not been a part of it, it wouldn't have happened at all. Black producers are very small fish in a gigantic pond that is Hollywood. And white producers have known for years that black audiences don't typically watch dramas--they prefer comedies. That's why they say no, even to George Lucas. So, when a black producer comes along peddling a drama, he or she has a damn near impossible task of getting it produced. As great a writer and filmmaker as Spike Lee is, even he can't get everything he wants green-lit. He usually has to seek outside sources to fund his films. But then again, so does Woody Allen.
The rest of the black-themed films are usually from Tyler Perry, but he's not winning any Oscars anytime soon. He's a populist movie director who makes movies for a specific and loyal demographic. He isn't interested in art or making a film that will be talked about fifty years from now. He is only interested in entertaining his audience. And what he does puts butts in seats.
But the bottom line is, no one is asking or requiring you as a white person to like these films. Personally, I don't care if you like them or not. I make no judgment on that whatsoever. But I suspect that YOUR problem is that these films are made at all. But why? Why does it matter to you if black-themed movies are produced once or twice a year? What does that take away from you personally? Are we not supposed to be able to tell our own stories? I don't like every black movie that comes out. What does that make me?
Mostly, I'm sick of this notion from some white people that whenever a black actor wins an award it's BECAUSE he or she is black. I'm tired of the notion that because a black film gets some accolades, it's BECAUSE it's a "black" film. I mean, the fact that Denzel or Halle wins an Oscar can't possibly be about their performances, can it? You'd probably call it the White Guilt Vote because you don't believe that we can win ANYTHING on merit, do you? And tell me, how many "black" films have won major awards? Can you name them? I'll give you a clue--there haven't been very many. In eighty-six years of the Academy Awards, there have only been fourteen black actors who have won that coveted statuette. Until 12 Years A Slave, NO black-themed film had won a major award. And just think how few the Asians and Latinos have won.
So, I'm not sure where you got the idea that all these black movies have gotten so much acclaim and attention. They really haven't.
Sister, when I've raised hell, you'll know it!
