Worst super hero show ever

This show shouldn't have taken so many episodes. In reality JJ would have killed Killgrave after 4-5 episodes. Why keep dragging it on and on?

reply

Why do you think so?? I think it is realisitc that it took her a while to get to him, because she wanted to make sure that no one else was hurt.

reply

She risked too many lives (and resulted in several deaths) just to protect one girl from going to prison? Too many flaws in her reasoning for that. And in each confrontation after finding out he has no powers over her, she never decides to bring a weapon? Sorry but even for hero shows, its just too much too overlook

In my opinion I think Jess related to Hope on a deeply personal level because they had very similar experiences of being abducted and used by Kilgrave against their will. To her it was much more than just another girl. She rescued Hope and felt responsible for not stopping Hope shooting her parents. And she was the only one who knew Hope was innocent, so I think she was deeply invested in clearing her name.

This exactly. Yes, she wanted to help Hope but this was all very personal for her. She couldn't tell of her experience when it happened to her but clearing Hope can validate her own trauma.

Yup. Heck they even named the character "Hope" for Pete's sake. She was as much a symbol as she was a person.

I'll add that Kilgrave selected Hope 100% to get to Jessica. If Kilgrave hadn't wanted to get to Jessica, Kilgrave may have never bothered Hope or if he did he certainly wouldn't have made her kill her parents.

Jessica is very single minded in that she wants to protect Hope and neutralize Kilgrave. She isn't a "superhero", and in fact states several times that she doesn't want to be. She sees herself in Hope and wants to help her in the way that she was never helped when she was under Kilgrave's control.

As for dealing with Kilgrave, she did not know he had no power over her until very late in the series. Even when that happens, he has Luke Cage to control and fight her with instead. Kilgrave was using other people (and her compassion for them) to prevent her from doing any harm to him, which I thought made him a much more diabolical villain.

So by that reckoning, Batman must be one of the worst superheroes ever, because he refuses to kill Joker even though he keeps coming back to kill hundreds and thousands of people.

Right. Ditto for other homicidal Batman villains. Or Superman villains like Lex Luthor. Why did Thor not kill Loki at the end of the FIRST Thor movie?!?! Or lots of different times in the comics! Why did the FF not kill Dr. Doom! WHY NOT JUST KILL THEM AL!!!!?!?!?!?

Can you imagine the fan outcry if that happened?

Spend time in any comic book forum and you'll see this arguement played out - hell, it's been argued before the internet - with people arguing for both sides.

I'm not saying I agree with heroes like the Punisher, but more like someone like Invincible, who has always strived to stop the bad guys, but eventually knew he had no choice but to kill.

Anyway, you missed my point completely.

but the OP is specifically stating that this is the worst superhero show ever because of this despite every Superhero show/piece of media having this problem. Man of Steel, one of the few properties that didn't have this problem is even berated for not falling into that trap.

reply

Not as bad as all that CW DC garbage but bad in its own way. A swing and a big miss for Marvel with Jessica Jones.

reply

This actually plays into the main theme of the season, that of abuse and recovery. Jessica never thinks clearly where Kilgrave is concerned, because even though she's immune to his mind-control power, he still controls her life to a debilitating degree. Seeing him again paralyzes her, even though she was braced for it some degree, because this man took away everything she had, even herself. Many abuse victims never get to the point where they can confront their abusers, even to report them to the authorities and let the legal system handle it, never mind squashing said abuser's head like a grape.

I understand some of what you're saying..I am at ep4 now..and 3 was very contrived..the radio talk show ..irritating him without a plan??? The whole cop thing was too contrived..I want it to be good,it has potential..good characters in supporting roles..the neighbors,etc...but ep 3 was getting me a bit worried...I'll have to see. I need to stop comparing it to Daredevil which I loved..

reply

I was hyping the series before it hit because that's what fans do but now I'm warning everyone I know off of it. Not only is it poorly paced like the OP says but it really is poorly written, flat and shallow as well.

As a Marvel fan, this has been my greatest disappointment in the MCU era... by far.

reply

I know it is going for a gritty edge with a very well constructed central character but the fact that all the effort but into getting one innocent person prison has so far cost 8 people their lives - haven't reached end of season yet.

Simple fact is if she had followed advice for assassination then those 8 people would still be alive. That was the choice, no ifs or buts, her not killing him meant they died.

reply

Agreed! Horrible show! Makes no sense. Let's keep him alive to prove the innocence of one person well and dozens more are killed. Just kill him. That girl in prison doesn't even care one way or the other.

reply

You understand the decision to keep him alive was made by the character (Jessica) right? So is it possible we're supposed to be frustrated at her flaws/weaknesses?

Not saying that it should suddenly make everyone like the show who didn't but in terms of "makes sense" - it's the character you should be looking at.

It annoyed me too at first, but what I came to realize is that Kilgrave is way smarter than what I gave him credit for, and far more devious as well. The reason we didn't know was because Tennant made him so damn likeable, and his whimsical attitude had all of us thinking he was clumsy, lovestruck, and easily killable. I thought it was pretty damn brilliant myself.

reply

I agree that David Tennant gave a great performance as Kilgrave.

If it's all the same to you, I'll have that drink now.-Loki (Marvel's Avengers)

You must not have heard of the Cw then...

Worst super hero show ever?
Then you must have not watched Arrow.

Your knowledge of tv history is far too narrow. There have been many, many worse shows.
