The sex scenes were a huge mistake

This movie is mesmerizing, there really is nothing else like it. Those sex scenes, and being so graphic were a huge mistake. Besides being awkward and feeling out of place, they actually take you out of the movie. It's like you are wrapped up in wonderful scene after wonderful scene, then suddenly you feel like you are watching a lesbian porn scene.

I can understand some people criticizing the long sex scene, while I don't think it as porn at all. I feel that people should be more relaxed towards sex, see the beauty and not the shallow porn.

The sex scene in Adèle's room is for me the best sex scene, it shows much more emotion and cute dialogue.

well to be honest i think you only feel this way because you are used to american movies, and i felt the same way at first!!! i am a straight female from the US and i was pretty shocked by the sex scenes initially, but after multiple viewings of this movie i feel like those scenes really help the audience visualize the love adele and emma had for each other and were absolutely necessary.

in the US we are used to 2 seconds of moanin and groanin, then a quick cutaway shot to the sheets and BOOM..that means they had sex!!! but that aint real life, and if you want a realistic movie with loooooong 5 minute shots of adele eating spaghetti and running to catch the bus then you should be fine watching 5 minutes of sex!!

Nah, even in European cinema, sex scenes don't last that long ... the question is, if it was a straight romance, would have we needed long sexual interludes to make the point that they love each other, certainly no, so why shouldn't that apply for lesbian romance too?

...and this is the very closest we have of seeing Porn On Netflix ...... looks to me like the sex scenes were all shot at once and then spread over the period of the film in three or four separate places .. My complaint ( if any,,) is you didn't have to have 3 & half minutes of intense in your face- sex ( and I do believe this was not simulated sex ) where we could have had shown (thru editing) maybe 20 odd seconds and then use your mind to fill in the blanks .. But thanks to the director we could just sit back and indulge ..

I think what was suggested was a lot more graphic than what was portrayed, but I did find the sex scenes out of sync with the rest of the film and entirely unnecessary.

The only reason Kekiche shot these scenes was to generate headlines. Simple as that! Brokeback Mountain had a brief sex scene. Can you imagine if they got it on for ten minutes? Those scenes were totally unnecesary. There are thousands of love dramas that do without explicit sex. Also, I find it despicable that Kekiche exploited these young women and traumatised them. I can imagine how they initially wanted to back out and then feared the consequences. To watch this movie with your parents is bad enough but it's even worse to know you are the one on the screen. When will people stand up to people such as Kekiche and Scorsese? When will people stand up and say stop to these old men fantasies?

@burgershmurger.You said:"When will people stand up to people such as Kekiche and Scorsese?"The only Scorsese I know is Martin Scorsese. If you meant him then what did Martin Scorsese do that people should stand up to?

reply

Agreed, while they were hot as hell, I found them to be way too excessive and over the top for a "not porn" movie.
Eating scenes were over the top too. XD

I don't know if I agree that the sex scenes were out of place because I am not a director but they didn't really ruin the movie for me. IMO they were a bit more graphic/long than they needed to be but I just fast forwarded through them. I still got the emotions of the story so I don't think I lost anything but for people that can watch them maybe they would agree they added something to the film.

reply

I wouldn't suggest anyone fast forward through the sex scenes. They are an integral part of the girls' relationship and thus an integral part of the film itself. There's no need to be prudish or avoidant toward sex. It's a healthy, and physical way, to enact love or attraction.

The sex scenes added a lot more dimension to the characters and their relationship. They were suppose to be graphic to show the objective part of their relationship, and then show the difference with the subjective part of their relationship. When it comes to the sex and lust, they absolutely love each other, and are in lust with one another. But when it comes to everything else, they have nothing in common. Adele is pretty much an outside among Emma's friends, and Adele is not as educated, nor as cultured as Emma or her friends. And once the passion was gone in their relationship, Adele ended up cheating on Emma.

It's a very normal relationship, but the sex scenes, and the changing of Emma's hair color adds a lot of depth to the story. And the cinematography, acting, and the visual storytelling is absolutely amazing to watch as well.

I never felt that the sex scenes took me out of the film, they actually more character depth, so I was fully engaged during my first viewing. And the film gets even better with repeated viewings.

The sex scenes got losers like me to watch it in the first place. I'm glad I did. The movie was surprisingly great.

They weren't a mistake from a business point of view. Who would buy a three hour French movie without the promise of explicit sex scenes?
