Why did he always have a cig to smoke, but no food?

First, I absolutely LOVED this movie.

But I couldn't understand how Mud desperately needed food because he couldn't be seen to go buy it, yet, he always had a cigarette. Yes, I noticed that sometimes he smoked a butt that he had saved, but still. He just always seemed to be able to smoke when he wanted, but not eat.

Did this bother anyone else?

When the kids first get to the boat they see a fresh half-loaf of bread and some cans of beans in shopping bags. It is totally within reason for him to have bought a carton of cigarettes along with that food when he first was on the run before everyone was looking for him. He needed the kids to get him food later on because by then, there were wanted posters and cops everywhere. At least that is my way of explaining it away.

That's what I got too. It's easy to load up 4 cartons of cigs. Much easier than 4 days of food. Also it was easier to buy the cigs without going into the big markets - piggly and walmart to be noticed. He said he had money- that it wasn't the problem at the beginning of the film.

In a couple of scenes it is apparent that Mud is lighting up "shorts", so it can be deduced that he is smoking a cig in two or three rounds to make then last. But the idea that he had a carton is not unreasonable.

well i'ts so BAD that they try 2 make all peeps smoke by makin such actor do smoking ok???? try 2 make it b so cooler and all that dum dum stupid stuff wich makes me vry MAD even!!!!!!

I was wondering how he got fresh bread.

A loaf of bread that is springy to the touch is only a same day thing, or one day.

Didnt bother me, because he wasn't smoking ALL the time, and if he had a packet of 20 and smoked 3 a day it would last a week almost, this movie was only set out over 4-5 days.

How much time passes during this film? Maybe he was just rationing his pack? :P

One of the posters above says 4 to 5 days, but I thought it was supposed to stretch over a much longer period than that, given the time needed to repair, outfit, free and move the boat. For me the least realistic part of the film, was that Ellis and Neckbone could apparently continually supply all that gear and food (maybe cigarettes??) over such a period without drawing attention to themselves. It's not till the business with the boat engine that any thing is really said at all.

Just watched this today.

No, this didn't bother me. I mean we don't need filmmakers to explain everything in great detail. You could've come up with reasonable answers just by watching the movie, as already pointed out.

My stepfather always used to comment about films made in the 40's and after that it was so unrealistic because even in the worst conditions, the actresses would be running around with perfectly coifed hair and even lipstick. At least finally movies have started to get realistic about that.

Yeah, even if he had brought a carton with him, how would he have gotten it to the island dry if he had to swim? Maybe the boys brought in cigarettes, and maybe Tom sent some in the bag.
