Why did he always have a cig to smoke, but no food?

First, I absolutely LOVED this movie.

But I couldn't understand how Mud desperately needed food because he couldn't be seen to go buy it, yet, he always had a cigarette. Yes, I noticed that sometimes he smoked a butt that he had saved, but still. He just always seemed to be able to smoke when he wanted, but not eat.

Did this bother anyone else?

Maybe he stocked up on cigarettes before going to the island, knowing he'd be in exile for a while? You're right though, it seems like an oversight on the part of the filmmakers.

True, but I know quite a few people who are like that. They always have cigarettes but never seem to be able to get food on their tables and/or gas in their cars.
I ain't judging, just making an observation.

This didn't bother me, it didn't even cross my mind really. I assumed when the kids realized someone was living in the boat, that maybe Mud hadn't been there too long. So the idea that he was starving, but arrived to the island with a carton of cigarettes was feasible to me. He had a lot of items on the island such as rope, magazine, some food, and even a pistol on him. Plus, I kind of imagine most smokers will find a way to get their hands on some cigarettes before a lot more important things in life.

I thought that too! Ha.

I thought that as well. No food but a never ending ciggerette supply.
