Why did he always have a cig to smoke, but no food?

First, I absolutely LOVED this movie.

But I couldn't understand how Mud desperately needed food because he couldn't be seen to go buy it, yet, he always had a cigarette. Yes, I noticed that sometimes he smoked a butt that he had saved, but still. He just always seemed to be able to smoke when he wanted, but not eat.

Did this bother anyone else?

reply

Haha! Yes! I totally loved the film but hubby and I commented on that too- bit annoying really.

I figure it was set at a time before the heavy tax on cigarettes, but it annoyed me as well. I think a better choice to set the mood for the character would be to roll his own. In 1990, when Fugazi had 2 album releases, I read $1.23 for a pack of Camels and cheaper brands would be, well, cheaper...

The calendar on the wall (fridge? I forget) in their houseboat clearly says September 2011.

In Arkansas, you can usually get a carton of Marlboros for under $60 (includes fed and state tax). The generic ones go for about $40 to $50. I live near the MO border and can get Marlboro special blends for about $37 in MO.

I'm gonna have to disagree, because that's just contrived.

reply

Cigarretts are pretty cheap in the south still. its possible he had a carton, or even two that would last him longer than his food.

reply

Ya, it bugged me also.

reply

I see homeless guys smoke all the time

reply

Yes but other people can show their face in public and pick up butts or beg for money or cigarettes. Mud was unable to do that which makes it seem unrealistic that he always had a cigarette to smoke.

reply

Just saw the movie. Didn't we only see him smoke like 3-5 times out of all the times we saw him? To me it seemed like it might even be the same pack he used all along. And since he could also get a gun, I don't find it hard to grant him that he could get a few packs with him as well.

It's like a friend of mine said, "Addicts will always take care of their bad habits first, and if they need anything else, charity will find them."

Remember you can eat your cigarettes but can't smoke your food. Same theory for owning a new Cadillac and living in a dilapidated shack. You can sleep in your car but can't drive your shack.

You can eat cigarettes as much as you can eat your shack.

wtf are you talking about?

You can't eat cigarettes... Well I mean, you can, but you would get very sick and possibly die.

reply

He probably had "food" but it was possum and rat, that's why he wanted some store food.

Cigarettes he could have scrounged from floating trash and dried out.

reply

Talk to life-long cigarette smokers. When they're flat broke and hungry, they'll scrounge for coins to buy cigarettes first, then for cheap food, because god forbid they run out of cigarettes.

Dear Ndugu, how are you? I am fine.
