its like the exact same audience went to see each one! All the 40 somethings who grew up on these R rated SF franchises in the 80s and 90s and remain obsessed to this day (that todays Gen Zs couldn't care less about)
AC had slightly biggest opening as its RScott doing Alien again but then dropped off pretty quick when audiences found it was like Prometheus again
BR2 had highest domestic as a BR2 was a bigger deal, there were positive reviews (& Harrison Ford) and therefore was abit of repeat viewing.
TDF had lowest opening/domestic as audiences were already jaded after TG and this was no better/all woke. but had better overseas than AC/BR2 as its Terminator/Arnold
then there was The Predator which had lowest of all (24 opening/51 dom/109 overseas = 160m) as had no returning stars like BR2/TDF (Arnold or even Glover or Brody) or A list director (like RScott) to entice audiences
BLADE RUNNER 2049 is the only FILM you've listed that I've seen.
So guess that kind of blows your theory that the EXACT SAME AUDIENCE went to see each one of them???
Not familiar with AC or what it's about. Is it related to the other ALIEN films? If so, then isn't that story mostly an ACTION FILM or MONSTER FILM which also fits into the HORROR CATEGORY???
And even though the newest TERMINATOR also has a SCI FI FILM setting, Imo, it also fits more into the ACTION FILM GENRE or category, whereas BR2049 is much more CEREBRAL in nature (deals with PHILOSOPHICAL QUESTIONS about what it means to BE HUMAN).
As you may (or may not recall), TRYRELL ( the one who created the REPLICANTS in the ORIGINAL BR film) also had the MOTTO that the REPLICANTS he creates were "MORE HUMAN than HUMANS."
And BR2049 also explores that same THEME again with the presentation of the character JOI ... who is neither a HUMAN nor a REPLICANT ... but still manages to be MORE HUMAN than most of the other HUMANS and REPLICANTS in the film.
The Alien franchise took a sharp turn towards pretentious metaphysics in Prometheus and there's not much difference between Weyland-Yutani and Tyrell. AC was a step back again towards known tropes. It's still about the relation between creation and creator.
So far for the parts comparable to BR2049. They differ wildly in their roots. BR is a brainy SciFi book, Alien is a dark space shocker.
No idea how TDF should fit in here, it's as deep as any Transformers installment.
The Weyland-Yutani corporation was originally named Weylan-Yutani, the original name was created by Ron Cobb, one of the designers of the Nostromo and its crew's uniforms
And "NOSTROMO" is also the name of a NOVEL by JOSEPH CONRAD about SILVER MINES in South America and the corrupting kind of an influence that the silver can have on a person".
In other words, one is also still not sure what the connection is that you draw between these 2 CORPORATIONS.
Because one of the REPLICANTS (ROY BATTY) also KILLS the GOD of BIO MECHANICS or the person (TYRELL) who created him due to the way he only gave him a 4 YEAR LIFE SPAN.
But one doesn't recall anything like that happening in ALIEN???
To put it another way, it's the same as if one of us HUMANS were also to find and then CONFRONT our CREATOR ... who is also suppose to have also made us and given us LIMITED LIFE SPANS that also have EXPIRATION DATES (due to the way we also DIE) ... and then we also KILLED THEM like ROY KILLS TYRELL.
Does something like this happen in ALIEN???
People have often compared TYRELL to being like GOD, and they also say the other GENTLE character who plays CHESS with him and befriends PRISS and ROY is like JESUS.
But one also doesn't recall any RELIGIOUS THEMES taking place in ALIEN???
And WALLACE and his COPORATION in BR 2049 is even MORE EVIL than the TYRELL CORP. (due to the way that he KILLS the NEW BORN simply because she can't CREATE more NEW BORNS for him).
Plus he also wanted to DISSECT DECKARD OFF WORLD in an effort to try to figure out how he'd been able to CREATE a child with a REPLICANT.
To put it another way, WALLACE also made it pretty clear that he also considered himself to be some kind of a GOD (which is also confirmed by the way that he refers to ANGELS and to LUV being his BEST ANGEL).
The mission of the Nostromo was to bring back the Alien, Ash is their android on board. Weyland-Yutani searches for the makers of human life, until their creation takes over. It's the arc in Prometheus and Alien Covenant, culminating in David (poetic, but not Roy Batty) - killing the engineers. Face-huggers and other iterations (like we see in Alien, Aliens, ... ) were more or less bred in the process by (the first) David.
"But one also doesn't recall any RELIGIOUS THEMES taking place in ALIEN???"
The very beginning of Prometheus is a creation myth. David's motivation directly depends on knowing his god (Peter Weyland) in person.
If you want to watch the Alien movies in order, here's the timeline:
2023: Young Peter Weyland's TED Talk: https://youtu.be/E4SSU29Arj0
2093: Prometheus (2012)
2104: Alien Covenant (2017)
2122: Alien (1979)
2183: Aliens (1986)
2184: Alien 3 (1992)
2434: Alien 4 (1997)

Thanks for the explanation and for the links! Not sure I can find the time to watch the films again though ... because one still hasn't had time to check out the DVR to try and figure out the answer to this question from over on my other topic:
----------
JOI also SPYS on the situation when MARIETTA first approached K (after the REBEL leader tells her and 2 other girls to "GO FIND OUT what he knows)."
So how did JOI manage to do that??? Did K forget to turn her off, or did she find a way to turn herself on again to accomplish that goal of SPYING on him at that time???
Guess one also needs to try and watch that scene again to see if there's any CLUES to let us know how JOI was able to accomplish that. Plus she also CONTACTS MARIETTA without K's knowledge as well and invites her over for the 3 way sexual encounter without K's permission for MARIETTA to be there at his place???

Also Tried reading the REVIEW of what happened in the ALIEN FILMS, but since it's been so long now since one has seen these movies nothing much seems to be registering anymore for some reason.
This part of it rings a bell though due to the way it says they RESEARCH ALIEN TECHNOLOGY as opposed to TYRELL and WALLACE dealing with NON ALIEN TECHNOLOGY:
Yutani corp started from research of alien technologies and developing it's own produstcs. Weyland corp on the other side was definitely big company before alien tech discovery.
Partially, it was. AFAIR, the David from Prometheus found something on the planet where he started from (the remaining "anti-life" if the planet was Pandora's box). It became such a danger because of him. We see different steps in the Alien's guided evolution during Prometheus and AC.
Like all prequels, it's patched on and the creation-stuff is mostly to be found in Prometheus and AC. The older movies have thinner plots and don't really hint in this direction. It's mainly the newer two movies picking up the Pinocchio/Geppetto theme.
"BLADE RUNNER 2049" was more intriguing and was much easier to comprehend ... even though several QUESTIONS still remain LEFT UNANSWERED about what was really going on (due to the BLACK OUT and the DESTRUCTION ... and the DELIBERATE MANIPULATION ... of so many RECORDS that took place at that time).
That's also why one suspects K may be the SON of DECKARD and that ANA may also be a DECOY or another being like JOI who is only composed of 1's and ZERO's (which would also explain the reason why she's confined to being inside of that GLASS BUBBLE that she inhabits).
Because IF she was able to live without existing inside of that BIG BUBBLE at the ORPHANAGE as a child, then why should she need it to protect her as an adult???
Something just doesn't seem to quite ADD UP right.
PLUS K and JOI also found the other RECORDS on MICROFILM that said the GIRL TWIN (not the BOY TWIN) is the one who had DIED.
And I'm also still DYING to KNOW WHO (if anyone) was the one who was pulling on the PUPPET STRINGS of JOI.
Personally, I also like to believe that she also became a REAL BOY (or GIRL) like the case was with the other Wooden PUPPET in the FAIRY TALE.
Has anyone seen STAR TREK: PICARD??? That's also a story where a SYNTHETIC BEING has a DREAM about seeing herself laying on a table in a LAB SETTING where she's SPLIT UP into several different pieces that are made of WOOD. And at the end of S1 the CONSCIOUSNESS of the HUMAN PICARD also ends up being inside of a SYNTHETIC PUPPET BODY after he dies (sort of like the way that RACHEL also has/had the MEMORIES of TYRELL'S NIECE IMPLANTED into her BODY in the original BR).
Alien:Covenant is one of the biggest piece of trash films i have ever seen.
i really, really, really, regret buying a ticket for it and adding to the statistics.....
I saw all three films but I do not recall if I saw all three in the theater.
I definitely saw Blade Runner 2049 in the theater. In fact, it's one of the few movies in my life that I went to see twice.
Of the three mentioned, it is easily the best and by a wide margin. I was surprised by it's relatively poor box office performance. I was thinking it was going to be huge, like $500M gross easily, and possibly even a billion dollar haul. Obviously I was wrong.
Youd have thought Matrix Resurrections would've easily been in the 250m range despite covid/HBO (post Wick Keanu headlining again, 90s nostalgia). Yet it be lucky to make anything near The Predator total
Currently at 10m opening/32m dom/75m overseas = 105m
Totalled out at a pathetic 156m . I guess if no HBO it would've managed similar to AC, BR2049, TDF. And if no pandemic at all then maybe 300m or more. Strange to think back in 2003 Matrix Reloaded (R rated) made the pretty much the same as Spiderman 2 the following year. (741m to 788m). Also back in 03 you had 2Fast2Furious doing 236m yet in 2021 its 726m (and thats a low grossing entry due to covid)
Weird how the 'retro'/90s R rated SF franchises that were huge like Matrix, Terminator fall as others from the same era (that they were just as big as at one point) continue to thrive like Spiderman, Star Wars, Jurassic
he's good if the scripts good. The 2049 script was fairly strong. And he wanted to direct but was tied to Covenant. But Denis did good and put his 'Deniness' on it (but abit too long , like Ridley has said)
Movies have always been a loss profit business. Might as well be a mafia.
Investors get a full loss write off, as the spinners never show an actual profit, actors and crew are well paid regardless, temp production company files bancruptcy, on to a new movie, new money, new company, rinse repeat.
Some how it's legal, and no one gets murdered. Most get rich.
Doesn't matter if the movie is good or not.
If by chance it does really great, more get richer, and the marketing budget mysteriously eats that all up, so it doesn't profit technically.
