VANGELIS on new Blade Runner score

Vangelis himself wasn't asked to score Blade Runner 2, and he's OK with that. "You can never repeat certain things," Vangelis says. "It's only once in a lifetime. It's like doing another Chariots Of Fire. It's impossible."

btw: his latest work got nominated at next years grammy

Tell that to John Williams...

Vangelis not doing this is super-lame.

If he was asked and turned down the offer that's one thing, but to not ask it an insult to him and fans alike.

reply

The teaser has tiny bits of his original score so who knows - perhaps the sequel will feature some of the original soundtrack.

Denis Villeneuve always collaborate with Johannsson. Blade Runner 2049 should have been an exception and work with Vangelis.
To be fair, he kinda was busy at that time with his latest work and some works with GZA.

reply

Big mistake not asking him to score it. The music was iconic on BLADE I.

reply

I bet the music will be iconic here, too, though admittedly this is a high bar to meet.

reply

I think the reason a lot of today's composers shoot for and miss the mark of creating an iconic score may or may not be the result of bad editing.

Some movies have good music, but it's places into scenes that would be better with less or no music at all. Some scores have the EPIC scale in every track when it's just not needed.

The best thing about a good score is when it blends seamlessly with the film and when you listen to it without the movie you can actually see the scenes playing out in your mind's screen.

reply

At least they pay tribute to Vangelis in the teaser. The last piece in this teaser is by Vangelis (his older score)

reply

The style of music he makes now wouldn't fit at all for this film, over the top orchestral music is not futuristic!! It's all down to those ROMpler's he uses vs the Yamaha CS-80 he used on the original Blade Runner.

reply

What a terribad mistake to not ask him...

reply

The music he makes now wouldn't fit AT ALL. I love what he did back in the 70's to mid 80's, after that using ROM samples vs real synths is where I loose interest in his output, cannot say enough about Opera Savage and OST Blade Runner.

reply

On the audio commentary of Final Cut, Ridley Scott said that Vangelis doesn't like his own work on Blade Runner. So I'm not suprised that they didn't asked him. Anyway if Johansson concentrates on Vangelis original soundtrack and mix it with some modern sounds. Why not? Just repeating things is lame.

reply

Vangelis comes of as very proud of his work for Blade Runner. His album "The city" sounds quite blade runner-ish, too.

He can still go and would have done a great job for the new Blade Runner!

reply

I would just like to second that if you liked Vangelis's score from the original Blade Runner, you should love his 1990 album, The City.

And though the world may turn too fast
If it should seem like paradise, don't let the moment pass...

Of course, Vangelis has a point, not only about the score but about the film as well. But hey, I still wanna see it!

BLADE RUNNER is not STAR WARS. It can’t be fabricated. It’s not a “Happy Meal” movie. It’s the real deal. - Chris Alexander
