Yawn

What a pointless movie.
All the other Alien movies were unique or great in some way.

Alien 1....is the original. One of the greatest movies of all time.

Aliens...one of the greatest sequels of all time, a proper action movie, which introduced colonies and queen xenomorphs to the franchise.

Alien 3...inferior to the first two, but it was first and foremost a PRISON MOVIE and a pretty decent one.

Alien Resurrection....certainly not a great movie, but the cloning and resurrection and other aspects made it somewhat interesting and unique.

Prometheus...a great movie underappreciated by lobotomized basement dwellers.
Beautiful scenery, intellectual philosophical theme, introduced Engineers, human origins and other aspects that turned the Alien franchise into more than just horror movies.

Alien Covenant...inferior to Promotheus, boring cast, but Fassbender, the Android theme and the foreign planet made it overall a somewhat enjoyable and unique Alien movie.

Then we have Alien: Romulus which is as generic as can be, except it surpassed Covenant in having an even worse cast. Yet another Alien movie where a crew come across face huggers and Xenomorphs for the first time, and they all die one by one except for the slightly lesbian-looking brunette girl.
What did it contribute to the Alien series? It just referenced stuff we had seen in the previous movies.
Yawn, seen this too many times before.

Alien³ is hated by most Alien fans so hey pretend that Alien³ doesn't even exist. This is David Fincher's worst movie.

reply

Alien³ was still better than this crap.

reply

It’s not hated by me. I would agree it’s far from Fincher’s best film, but for a directorial debut I’ve seen far, far worse. Coming from a music video background I feel he was still finding his feet with directing actors in the feature-length form (rather than telling Paula Abdul which way to look and when to shake her ass) and to my mind he did the best he could with the average script he had.

I always assumed people hated it so much because Ripley dies at the end (I take it I don’t need to worry about spoiler warnings at this late stage). From memory fans were not happy with that in the slightest and the backlash was swift, and slightly unwarranted.

I'd puzzle as to why someone would allow this film to be made.

The series is fairly epic with some great and unique films, especially for horror, and they allowed a cheap slasher film to be made that copies other films in the series.

It had no creative ideas or settings.

I would love to observe the process of okaying films.

reply

This one really isn’t get much love here, is it? I do think people may be overreacting about it being a catastrophic blight on the Alien canon. Let’s not forget there were two Alien Vs Predator movies which were also not cinematic masterpieces.

If it sucked, forget about it and wait for the next one, hopefully it will get things back on track. Also, there’s always those great Alien films to revisit and enjoy.

reply

I thought the Alien Predator movies would be epic but they were the same quality.

reply

I didn’t mind the first one. I mean it was not a great movie by any measure, but I was expecting worse. Dumb but fun. If Romulus is similar, it won’t bother me at all.

reply

A good movie about that topic would be an epic space based clash between humans, aliens, and predators.

A good twist would be the Predators being the good guys in the situation.

reply

Romulus received mostly positive reviews by the critics, and it's current IMDB score makes it the 3rd most popular movie in the series.
That's what's puzzling me.

I'd rank it just above Alien Resurrection.

It goes

Alien
Aliens
Prometheus
Alien3
Covenant
Romulus
Resurrection
AVSP 1
AVSP 2

reply

Exactly! That’s why I was so surprised by the savage mauling it’s getting here.

You raking it higher than Resurrection does give me some hope though. Resurrection was not perfect, but I thought it was one of the most visually striking films of the franchise and Jeunet’s aesthetic, which I admire greatly, made it a unique entry to the series. It was like a French arthouse take on Alien. Loved the cast too. If you think Romulus was the better film, I really think I’ll enjoy it.

reply

For me, the most puzzling part is the overall positive reviews and high IMDB score.
Shitty and unneeded sequels are made all the time, but they also get the bashing they deserve.
This one somehow didn't.

It's no better than Covenant and vastly inferior to Prometheus.

reply

Covenant at least attempted a story so it was better.

Whatever the case, I don't know why they don't hire professional science fiction writers.

reply

I agree, I thought Covenant and Prometheus were more sophisticated, and I mean with these Alien movies you can't leave it on a 'happy' ending. I gave this one a 5/10; like another thread mentioned, it was pretty much just a mash up of the other movies and didn't serve any purpose to the story nor the viewer. It was just a generic Sci-Fi horror movie with some fairly good CGI (bar Rook!)

They could have had something interesting with ND but they wasted that potential when they decided to take out Rook's chip.

reply

agree, and this one is B-O-R-I-N-G. it dosent even start untill 40 minutes in. its a pain to watch this
