Who here is NOT Iranian, and likes this movie? (im interested)
If you like it, then give three reasons as to why? im really interested in knowing why :)

shareI am an Indian and I just love this movie!
1. I had a strained relationship with my wife, even made up mind for filing a divorce. we had one little son and Termeh, the character, unforgettable it was, left me reeling with a feeling of guilt. We both love our son immensely, and he needs us, then why should we separate? And now not even a single thought of a separation is left in me.
2. I have not seen a movie with such a brilliant portrayal of human conditions wonderfully directed in recent times.
3. Acting, simply brilliant and original as watching life live through a CCTV.
I am Turkish and I liked this movie very much- even though it wasn't my favorite this year (it was Cafe de Flore). I am not religious so I'm not biased towards this being an Iranian movie as some might think. This movie was what I wish Turkish directors would come up with eventually and they just never do. It shows that a film can be artistic and exciting at the same time (the exciting part is what we lack in Turkey especially in Nuri Bilge Ceylan's films where every shot is a masterpiece but overall it bores you at the end. I'm sorry to say that and I really wish it wasn't the case). Anyway, as for your 3 reasons, I must agree with all the others:
-Acting was superb.
-It was just really humane and natural. After a while, I forgot that it was a film and it became real and let's face it, it doesn't happen that often in movies- especially in recent ones.
-One of the best scripts out there and I hope that and I really have a feeling that it will be nominated for an Oscar in this category too. You know Oscars get it wrong most of the time but they made some reasonable choices before (I recall Lars and the Real Girl was up for a really deserved screenplay Oscar and it was a surprise too so we can never know for sure). Also they get it right most of the time for Best Foreign Film Oscar and this film is of course in the shortlist and will most likely get it. However, I'm really surprised that Where do we go now isn't on the list. It's not a masterpiece but still...

What I liked about this movie can be summed up in this... I didn't know who to root for, and I didn't know what to root for.
oh and if that wasn't not clear I Loved the film.

Turkish. Fantastic film. Possibly my favourite of 2011. Great script, excellent acting, and wonderful directing.
shareIm an Indian Canadian - loved this movie.
As an aside, Jafar Panahi is my favorite Iranian director. Is he ever going to be freed?
but i bet most of you wathched it and then liked it because of the hype, golden globe and,...
cuz there are better Iranian films out there as there has been before but no one was watching them , now this one is getting 8/6 point!!!! higher point than TAXI DRIVER !!! wtf
i liked it and discussed it for few days with friends , but what we are talking about right now is that was it really that GOOD ?!

to reza
1. people dont like it more than taxi driver.
2. yes points dont matter, agreed to that
maybe you didnt get my point,my problem is with the HYPE around the movies and this bussiness. the ooz and aaazz. watch Warrior and compare it to the fighter last year, better made , better acted ,even more emotional ,but who notices ?! that movie sells like hell , wins tons awards (not that they matter) and ,...all beacause of that hype.
i do agree that its pointless conversation but my goal was to encourage people who liked this movie to go and do some research and find other great iranian movies too.

You two had an interesting argument there, yet neither of you mentioned this: How many people watched the "Taxi Driver" within the first three or so months of its release and how many watched "A Separation"? Also, why did people (not just on imdb) watch both films, for what reason? They obviously didn't watch them for the same reasons, obviously not every American or European will call it a 'classic' (which is a shame), in the way they do today about the 'Taxi Driver', so one simply cannot ever compare 'A Separation' to any American film, made by the American film industry. We are very lucky to have watched a film that tells us about every-day Iran, to get a glimpse of the real life there, and not of what the media wants us to see, hear and learn.
Unfortunately, us in the West miss wonderful, strong films, such as 'A Separation' made outside Hollywood, around the world, just because we're stormed with Hollywood trash and don't have the time to search for quality films. 'A Separation' is worth so much more than any other shallow drama film released by Hollywood in the last few years to say the least.
Anyway, I'm Greek and I obviously loved it. :)

1)Screenplay
2)Acting
3)Direction.
I wont explain these three aspects because it will be hard to explain them in short.
I'll just say that I believe this to be the best film I have ever seen. The emotional impact it had on me will last forever. It beats out "4 months 3 weeks and 2 days"(My previous favorite film of all time)
I'm a Swedish filmmaker based in San Francisco. This was easily the best movie I have seen in years (specifically since "There will be blood") and I rated it a rare 10.
In addition to all the worthy praise it has already received, I thought the following observations were interesting:
- Even the judge, whom many of us Westerners would normally have a hard time sympathizing with, actually comes across as reasonable and fair guy; who also happens to be effective at performing his no doubt difficult job. It makes me interested in learning more about Sharia and the overall workings of the Iranian court system. I am sure it still has its share of significant problems but so does ours.
- The husband we suspect may be physically abusive is indeed proven to be so - but only to himself.
- Although the stakes are fairly small (compared to other top rated movies) I got sucked into the film from the first second and then never let go. I would have hated to have to go to the bathroom for even a minute. This is rare for someone that watches 200-300 movies a year and tends to drift off for at least a few moments even during the best of movies.
I am going to watch the other movies written and directed by Mr. Farhadi now. The profound talent showcased in this film must show in his previous work as well.
Cheers

Saw this at TIFF back in Sep/11 with the director in attendance - was my vote for the People's Choice Award.
1. Great script - I sat riveted through the entire movie, completely lost in the story. I felt absolutely plunked right in the middle of a real, human drama. 2 hours flew by fast.
2. Great acting - All of the main characters have difficult, complicated emotions to display, and they do it well. You feel the anger, misery, desperation. Even the minor characters are good.
3. Thought-provoking: I marveled at the way my opinions of the characters shifted during the movie. I found myself aligned with someone, then repelled, then intellectually agreeing with one side and then another, it was just engrossing.
I don't mind saying it's the best movie I've seen recently, because truthfully 2011 was kind of a disappointing year for me. I'm looking at the Oscar noms for best movie, best actor, screenplay, bla bla bla and there's too much Hollywood ham and nothing really as fine as this, imho.
