Finally an Asian hero.
This is actually quite a big step in Hollywood. In all these decades not many Asian actors have been heroes besides the martial arts stereotype. I applaud the movie makers for this nice step.

Even if characters are a certain race in a book they can sometimes be portrayed by white people once the script goes through the hollywood machine. I honestly kept expecting him to die because that's what I've learned from watching movies, the non white characters die before the end. I was also pleased to see he didn't and was a hero of the movie.
sharekorean is white anyway.
THRILLER IS MY FOOD!
What the hell
White = caucasian, as in average european profile
Have you ever seen a korean at all
Because they might me a lot of things but they surely are not "white"
I mean they all got white skin, I've seen a lot of korean movie. Never see any black/brown korean. I know in this world white generally prefer to caucasian, and I just know that arabian is caucasian too (from wikipedia).
THRILLER IS MY FOOD!
But Asian, Pacific Islander and Native American are not Caucasian. Race is becoming unnecessary anyway.... there are so many mixes. When a child is half Central American (which likely means Native (Central) American with Caucasian & Negro possibly thrown in and part Arab (Caucasian likely with Negro thrown in), HOW is that child supposed to classify him/herself? Ethnicity is becoming more and more relevant than race.
shareI just know that arabian is caucasian too (from wikipedia).
yeah, u r right, "white skin" is preferred to european origin, while caucasian is preferred to any human being who is tall, have white skin, a lot of beard, high nose, colorful hair (usually blonde, you can find this kind a lot in middle east too such as poor syrian & jordan), colorful eyes. While other 2 kind, mongoloid (for chinese kind of people) and negroid (for african kind of people). For southeast asian people, scientist said they are the mixture between negroid, mongoloid & some caucasian (but less), that's why they have light-skin/brown, same with aborigine and indian people. So, arab is totally caucasian type of human. If arabic people live with european lifestyle, they will totally looks "white-skin".
THRILLER IS MY FOOD!
Nop, and neither are jews.

It was in the book. But I agree, usually Hollywood white-washed the characters especially if the directors are jewish
You do realize oriental refers to inanimate objects, yes? They're called Asian, not oriental. You can have an oriental product, not an oriental person.
Hate to go all PC, but some people just don't realize it's a derogatory term.
[deleted]
I have never met an Asian that liked to be called Oriental. I was always told Oriental refers to rugs, not people. I have known quite a few Asians in my life and they all hate the term. I don't care what a book, society, or history says...I prefer to not call people that if they hate that term. We could say that about a lot of ethnic groups. There are a lot of derogatory names in history books that have fallen out a fashion because people spoke out and said they don't want to be referred in that way and I respect that.
share[deleted]
The Orient means "the east". An oriental person is therefore a person from the east. This is no more inherently derogatory than being called a "Westerner".

So was the Avatar, and Dragonball Z, didn't stop them from giving "orientals" auditioning the axe..

i bet the Asian kid gets the chop 30 sec into the next movie :P

I bet you that won't happen. Maze Runner made more money in South Korea than Guardian of the galaxy. :) but more importantly I read the scotch trials already so...
shareNo, Minho is a major character. But he does disappear for awhile since the sequel novel focused heavily on Thomas and Teresa.
shareHe was less present but still he was the leader of the group. African American leader in the first movie and Asian leader in the sequel. Again no Marvel or DC movie has ever or will ever present this kind of diversity.
Unless Marvel and/or DC decided to change a character that was established decades and decades ago (Cap, Superman, Batman) or a centuries old Nordic god to a different race. If the mantle can be passed on, say from Tony Stark to a successor, then that would make more sense. New literature has the liberty of being more diverse than literature of previous generations.
How diverse are Bollywood productions? Or Asian movies based upon their cultural literature of a century ago?
So, you want a comic book hero that is not 'white'? Develop one, publish years of comic books building a following. THEN shop the idea around Hollywood to find monetary backing and a studio.
Well done boxerrebellion finally a bit of common sense. These characters WERE established decades ago. I think it's daft that they are making the Human Torch black in the new Fantastic Four not because I don't like a certain race but because The Invisible Girl is still white and they are biological brother and sister from the same father and mother. If as you say Colonel Rhodes took on the Iron Man role then he would be black and that would make perfect sense.
Oh gravity, thou art a heartless bitch!

Me too! Usually YA books and movies have more diversity in their casts than the majority of Hollywood movies but Maze Runner tops them all because the African American, Hispanic and Asian are not just there for the sake of sacrifice. They are actually leaders. More than you can say of the overwhelming majority of Marvel and DC movies
Maze runner made more money than other movies with an all white BIG NAMES cast and more budget for FX (like Noah).

Jackie Chan`?? Bruce Lee?? Jet lee??? dont even try do play the race card! reported.

You're making a joke about India = middle east and Russia = Asia and all that, aren't you? Because if you are not making a joke, then you should know that the border between Asia and Europe are the Caucasus Mountains and the Volga River. In fact, Turkey is part of Asia. And India is a very long way east of Turkey. India is undoubtedly Asian. As for Russia, it's actually LESS Asian than India in the following respect: All of India is contained within the continent of Asia. Only part of Russia is in Asia. The rest of Russia extends westwards through Europe.
So, to summarise:
Russia = Part Asian, Part European.
India = Entirely Asian.
Middle East = a region, not a continent.
So do tell; You were just making a joke, right? India is part of the Middle East? Russia is more Asian than India... That's just a joke, right? Anyway, if it IS a joke, I should put my hand up and say that I don't get it...

If there ASIAN then get rid of india since India is more in Middle east and Russia is more ASIAN then india.
Dang what is the new *beep* PC going to be!
Well then, if we wanna get specific, Minho is Korean. And not only is he one of the male leads, but the best character in the books, much more interesting than Thomas, imo.
grahamvandyke
Tell me about it. The biggest achievement by any actor is Steven Yuen on the walking dead being with a white woman (!!!). Aside from that asian characters are extremely stereotypical.

doesn't matter at the end the protagonist/hero will always be a caucasian male... that's hollywood
npanou
Do you get pissy when all Bollywood's protagonists are native Indians? How about how every south Korean movie in the past 10 years had south Korean protagonists (not to mention frequently racist depictions of westerners as buffoons or psychopaths)? I'm not american or Caucasian, but i don't understand why Hollywood is automatically expected to fulfil some sort of diversity quota. They can make whatever *beep* films they want that people will pay for, deal with it.
do-arellano-mayra
Also in the future there will be even more racial mixing. It's good that there are movies like maze runner that present overweight people, asian and african american leaders and include actors like Giancarlo Esposito who is evidently Mixed. That's how future will look like.
do-arellano-mayra »
Anyway the future will look less white honey and maze runner is a futuristic flick.
Go to Chicago New york and LA. Use your internet if you can't afford travelling. Open your eyes.
There are not worse blinded people that the ones who refuse to see. Asian cinema doesn't need to present diversity but Hollywood cinema does if they want to stay in the market and be believable.
Anyway american cinema has become more diverse and will become even more if they want to survive. They have to reflect the reality of the country.
!!!deleted!!! (6960062)
You have a point here, but they were still not totally hero like, more a part of the team and therefore they had no leading parts in the movies. The Maze Runner is different in that sense. Star Trek has always been ahead of the time though. How is the Maze Runner different? It's still the white kid who is the hero.

It's sad that America gets so much flak for having less non-white characters while the rest of the world continue populating all their movies with primarily their own race.
How many Indian movies with Caucasian leads or secondary roles?
How many China/HK/Taiwanese movies with Caucasian or secondary roles?
How many Indonesian movies with Caucasian or secondary roles?
etc etc
Give anyone an inch and they demand a foot. America should stick with all-whites and tell the whiners to shut up.
Want a diverse crew of actors? Fund your own damn movie.

Uh...that's because America is a melting pot of different races and cultures, which is why people want diversity in movies. Whites are no longer the majority.
All those countries you listed are obviously not going to have a Caucasian lead, because for one thing, there is no need to. The population in China consists of predominantly Chinese people, and their culture/rules is strictly Chinese.
northbay28
Yes, it's the Jews, who BTW are only 4% of the U.S population. However it all comes down to money. The Jewish moguls who run Hollywood are in it for the business, not to satisfy the 6% of Asians in American who want to see themselves as heroes on film.
So when they make films, they're going to cast whoever they think will sell the most tickets.
iheartentertainment
@wjwoe: I agree. that was a really good choice. I was thinking the same thing. We need to see more of other cultures on screen
saniainen-748-829141
Luckily asian guy wasn't doing typical doing typical things asian stereotypes, like being fast and solving mathematical/ingeneering/sciency problems, oh wait! And black guy wasn't doing what positive black guy clichés do in every other movie, like being smart or being leader(like in almost every cop movie), oh wait!
Maybe girl isn't just a pretty face, nope, she could be replaced by a rose and it wouldn't effect the plot.
If something, it's forced half baked divercy filled with racial clichés and stereotypes. And a real hero, the main characcter was still white! It's a step back.
akrisluvskev
Hollywood in America was started by white people, yet every race wants recognition. God forbid a cast is all white then race cards from every minority is thrown in the pile. If whites are so horrible, why does every one want to be around us. Stop expecting the white man to coddle you start your own industries and exclude us.
da_rc
when you say Asian, do you mean Asian or East-Asian? Because there's been Asian heroes before. The Guru is a movie with an Indian guy as a lead character (although the actor was born in England).
Asia is HUGE. You've got the middle east, the Indian peninsula and of course east asia (where you can add China if you'd like).
Always bothers me when Americans say Asian and only refer to half of Asia China + East Asia)
do-arellano-mayra
Jorge and Brenda played by mixed actors are also leaders in the second movie. That's refreshing.
mmw_rocket
Um, there are a lot of Asian people who live in America. Americans do not equal white people though a lot of people seem to think so.
I was happy to see an Asian character. Hollywood generally "whitewashes" Asian characters (like in Starship Troopers, Edge of Tomorrow, The Last Airbender, Aloha). Yet if a character that is often white gets turned black there are a million "Heimdall is supposed to be white" threads.
As far as the "hero" being from the country they are from, Hollywood loves Australian and British leads playing Americans but people only freak out about " race ".
LiveTogetherDialAPhone »
I, too, was impressed to see a strong, masculine Asian male lead in this film. He even has an Asian-sounding name. Definitely a step up for Hollywood. I was cringing throughout the maze scenes thinking he was going to get offed at any minute, but he made it all the way to the end.
The character development was a bit lacking, sure, but that's a complaint toward the entire ensemble, not just Minho. Now all we need is a strong Asian male character who isn't written to be asexual.
he was xd
