Why is the rating so low?

I am a very, very picky show watcher. Game of thrones, dexter, breaking bad, and house of cards are about the only ones I've watched every episode of (got by far the favorite). The all have high 8s and mid to low 9s ratings. I absolutely loved this show from start to finish of season one, yet this show only has an 8.1. Is there a particular reason why people don't enjoy it on the levels of the aforementioned?

reply

I don't know man, I loved The Man in the High Castle personally. And I have seen all those shows that you mentioned [except for House of Cards, i only saw the first few episodes a couple years back, but plan to watch the series at some point]. I have even seen GOT and breaking bad twice each and GOT is also by far my favorite. but anyway, the man in the high castle was very high quality i thought, up there with the best...i have no clue why its rating on imdb is not higher....apparently it's critically acclaimed but the masses don't seem to really get it..

-Are these the Nazis, Walter?
-No, Donny, these men are nihilists, theres nothing to be afraid of.

reply

I just hope it doesn't get cancelled in the middle of the plot. I don't know exactly how streaming services monetize the shows they produce, so I hope it is successful enough.

reply

The ratings depend on how many people watch it, and how big the show is. GOT was not meant to be as highly loved as it has become. Same with Breaking Bad and all the other hugely popular shows. Millions of people watch them, and the big number of IMDB watchers over the years that love it rate them extremely high.
The case of The Man in the High Castle is that there's only been 1season that is on only on Amazon Prime which is not as available to viewers as much as HBO and cable channels. It has yet to have a 2nd season date for sure (there will be one definitely), and so for a show that has only one season with characters that are generally new to people , therefore are not attached to say a Walter White or Tyrion Lannister an 8.1 isn't terrible. If it can go on and give us a more seasons, and get out onto Netflix or something like that at some point (which I doubt because they are both competitors) then it will go up.
At this point enjoy and spread the word on the show. I love it, and I've recently finished the book. The show just needs to stay very good, and characters need to become household names along with a lot more people on IMDb particularly rating it highly because it gets really good , and you will see a bump in the ratings. That's my take on it as far as ratings go, and the correlation to such great shows you are trying to put it together with.

THERES NO ROOM IN MY CIRCUS TENT FOR YOU !!!!

reply

That's not "picky", that's "popular"...

reply

Everybody likes pizza and steak, so it's popular. If that's all you will eat, would you consider that a picky eater?

reply

Good answer!

reply

9,5, 9,5 and 8,8 are the IMDB ratings. They may be popular, but that doesn't make his statement untrue.

reply

I think it's because it isn't on traditional television and it has a different concept. Some people probably don't give a chance because they don't understand it.

ETA Game of Thrones has over 1 million votes. Man in the High Castle has less than 30,000.

reply

Do younger viewers like it? I'm only just on the Pllot episode and it seems fascinating. I've seen boards on this site where some young viewers think there's "too much talking." Some.

It looks like this show is more popular with men, but I don't know why. As for the ages, younger people seem to enjoy it more than older people.

reply

That almost applies to all tv and movies.

reply

Can you read? Females have given it higher ratings and it's more popular among the young. That's probably because grown-ups don't appreciate the historical incorrectness of the movie and maybe also the language.

reply

are you for real? 8.1 is way too high for this turd of a show

reply

I agree. I'm on S1E4 and the script/acting/casting(aside from the 2 leads that are decent enough) is laughable and cartoonish... in a bad way.

And when I saw that C-grade "actor" DJ Qualls appear, I had to think that they aren't taking this series seriously. He can't act and ruins every scene he's in.

And that street gun battle that ensued after the ambush of the Nazis?.....wow, completely idiotic in every way.

How it is above a 5.5 is a mystery.

reply

Agreed. I think even 6/10 would be too generous.

IMDB, flagging ppl for bull💩 since 1995. 

reply

agreed, it was unbearably boring. I couldn't even finish the second episode.

reply

I thought it was awful boring, dark image, slow, stupid, etc etc....

Awful show!

Awful show

Oh what a day. What a lovely day!

reply

8.1 isn't that low. It's a high quality show, just not for everyone.

reply

I'm agreeing with these later posts. 8.1 is a fine rating for this show. It's a very interesting concept, maybe not executed as well as it might have been. I haven't read the book, I intend to. Just one person's opinion.

reply

3 Reasons:
1) Because it is not on a mainstream network like cable TV, Hulu or even Netflix.
2) It is a show about Nazis!
It wouldn't be politically correct to most of America and so would be seen as offensive.
3) It is about an alternate reality of if the Nazis had won the war.
It would offend the patriotism of man who had to fight in war to stop stuff like that from happening and of many others who consider themselves patriotic Americans who would consider this an unAmerican nightmare.

reply

.....Or even a national channel like PBS, the CW, ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, etc.

reply

*Correction - Meant to say, "many", not "man".

reply

Not only of those who faught in war but of those who actually survived being in Nazi Germany during WWII, who actually had to live through it or had family that lived through it, that were in Nazi Germany at the time of WWII.

reply

But personally, I love the show for the fantasy/alternative reality concept of the show and the 50s/60s era of it.
It's an interesting concept, of an alternate reality take on history.
That and I like the old style of 50s/60s movies, as one who hadn't been alive around that time period to actually be able to experience for myself. If I had been, I might feel different about the concept.

reply

This pretty much sums it up! I'm surprised the rating isn't much lower, considering all these points. I guess this series isn't mainstream enough to be discovered by the angry conservative masses.

On a sidenote, Brokeback Mountain is a great example of how political attitudes and conservatism effect rates here in IMDB.

So, what damian is saying is

The rating is low because of all the people who HAVEN'T seen it!

Pure genius.
