Would Queen be as popular now if they weren't gay?

I am of two minds on this. One, this stuff is pushed with marketing. There is not a single Fortune 500 corporation that does not fly the rainbow flag. Now that's really amazing because normally business stay out of political issues because they have nothing to gain and everything to lose by alienating people. You did not see top businesses taking a stance against the Iraq war for instance, or against bank bailouts. Couldn't one have prided itself on not taking bailout money? No, we get rainbow flags. It's shoehorned into every movie and TV show. It feels like sexual harassment.

On the other hand it could just be part of the trend of rehashing old culture because our modern culture is so terrible. White hipsters seem to like a lot of 80's music and tv shows now, and activities like cycling, all this SWPL that is free of the POCs and LGBTs ironically. Is Queen SWPL?

Yes, they are popular the movie was a hit and all my friends and their families went to see it!
I like to think that Wall Street is our overall problem, but for the Fortune 500, they stay in the $$$$$$$ and if it does not get them $$$$$$ they stay away! I believe that the LGBT is a closed set meaning they are not heard so when they get the chance they overplay it, this sets a bad light on them because they are overplaying it. ;0 So as a person who has had LBGT in their life I would say they like to have fun with it and their scars show sometimes. I am from the '60s and see SWPL as people, I try all genres once and make up my own mind, I am not in any category, I do my best not to judge others in any color, creed, race, working in fortune 500 or not. I have many friends working in fortune 500 and they don't listen to politics or even join in the politics of their companies mostly, they poo poo it. I still like Queen and always will, me, myself and I love love, to give it, receive it, or just spread the love of our universe whether or not it be LBGT or not. I have Hashimoto's disease and I cried my eyes out at the end of the movie because I felt for his demise, one autoimmune to another. Smile and the world will smile back.

I just saw a trailer for "Rocketman" an upcoming biopic about the equally gay Elton John, so I am guessing that being homosexual is the deciding factor in choosing 1970s rock stars to celebrate in the modern era.

Your male insecurity is beginning to show a lot here.

First of all Queen were not a gay band, they were let by a singer who was but that didn't make the band gay. Of course they would be as popular, popularity is governed by how much people like what is produced and Queen's music is cross generational, I have been listening to Queen since the mid 70's, my parents listen to Queen and they are in their 80's, my daughter who is 14 just set up a dedicated Spotify list of Queen music because her normal list didn't have enough Queen songs on it.
See do you now get it class overrides your prejudices.
Also stating that homosexuality is shoehorned into every movie and TV show is absolutely ludicrous, go through the top rating movies of the last five years and tell me how many of them featured gay characters or gay leading roles, same as TV shows.
I think you may be deluded or need to rearrange your viewing habits, maybe the fact that you see homosexuality in everything you watch might have Freud saying something.

"They" weren't gay. Freddy Mercury was gay (actually bisexual). But they would not be popular today, because music of that quality is no longer appreciated by young people. Popular music died twenty-five or more years ago. Today we get rap crap, falsetto emo boys, and autotuned robot Barbies. Sad, but true.

reply

Given that they got popular before the public learned that Mercury was bi, yeah id say they would be. My father introduced me to their music and i liked them a lot. I found out he was bisexual years later. So id say they would certainly be quite popular regardless of sexuality.

Queen is not the case of shoehorned diversity.

One could counter that the rainbow flag is not a political symbol but one of human rights.

Freddie Being gay or not has nothing to do with the Band’s popularity. Their music was fantastic. Their music feels timeless and their sound aged very well.

Freddie was an incredible frontman with one of the most unique voices in the music industry. When I felt in love with their music thanks to the movie I never thought it was great because Freddie was gay.

I just thought they were great period. one of the best rock bands Ever.
