To answer your question about why two movies similar in plot come out at the same time, I always assumed it was due to a progression of events similar to this:
1. Story creators pitch their idea to Studio A.
2. Studio A generally likes the idea but wants to make some changes (i.e. "let's make it more of a comedy" or "how about we give it a horror vibe by adding space zombies").
3. Story creators don't want to change their idea and decide to pitch it to Studio B instead.
4. Studio B likes the idea as is and decides to make the movie.
5. Studio A, now inspired to create their own story, decides to produce a similar movie with their desired adjustments to Story creators' original idea.
6. Studio A and Studio B produce movies similar in plot that come out at the same time.
I have no proof or evidence that this is really why it happens, but it makes sense to me.
