Two Snow White films within months of each other
How did this happen?

Two Asteroid films and two Volcano films come to mind.
It happens more often than you remember.
Of course, some times it's deliberate, like the the sloppy US version of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" with Rooney Mara that tried (and failed) to copy the brilliant Swedish original "Dragon Tattoo" with Noomi Rapace.
Who knows why the Hollywood moneymen do what they do? Watch "The Player" again to see how the process works.
"Stupidity got us into this mess, why doesn't it get us out?" - Will Rogers
They are two very different films. One is takes on a darker, more mature tone while the other is more kid-friendly.

Actually, it's three and there's another two fairy-tale themed tv shows from last fall. It's obviously just the thing

I just pulled a double-header: Mirror Mirror (at a $3 theater) followed by SWatH. It was my first time watching both films. I actually liked Mirror Mirror better. I thought the tone was more fitting for the Snow White story, and Lily Collins did a way better job of making Snow White her own character, while Kristen Stewart's version was basically exactly what it would have been if you had actually taken Bella Swan from Forks and teleported her into the SWatH world.
Also, MM at least attempted to explain SW's transformation from innocent girl to action hero. SWatH had Thor show her one fighting move (after which she said she didn't think she could do it) and suddenly at the end of the movie she's beating multiple trained soldiers in hand to hand combat.

"I miss Giles."
My thoughts ...
What if ... the hokey-pokey really is what it's all about?
There was also Snow White Deadly Summer this year as well.
