Two Snow White films within months of each other

How did this happen?

reply

I think sometimes people shop scripts around to different studios and sometimes the ones that pass just find different writers to write something on a similar subject. Like they like the concept but not the script or writers themselves. Just a theory...

actually, it's three. "Snow White and the Huntsman", "Mirror Mirror", and the tv series "Once Upon a Time"

still showing new episodes this season.

reply

I think it is due to the popularity of Once Upon A time on ABC, which was also competing with another fairy tale related TV show which came out in the same season, The Brothers Grimm (or something like that.)

no one mentioned Cinderella. but didn't this also happened with Cinderella back in the late 90's/early 2000's. I remember it being very popular and everybody making movies about cinderella.

well, now it's like they decided to make everything about snow white.

cos they have to sell us something, right?

it's either that. or

the people who did 'mirror mirror' saw the hype and promotion that the 'snow white & the huntsman' movie of obvious LOTR epic proportions was getting and said something like 'quick! we gotta come up with something similar so we can profit from the hype and fuss :D

what we as an audience need to understand is

that we have to stop consuming this *beep*

don't go to the theaters to see any of the snow white films. and don't get the dvd's and blue ray's.

this will force them hollywood people to actually make original movies. and stuff that's worthy of our time.

$200 million for a snow white film. are you *beep* kidding me.

This happens because the Hollywood film making community is relatively tight knit. It's inevitable that when concepts get bandied around the same social circles, that the same base ideas get used independently by different productions at around the same time.

This should be a reminder of the amount of media influence coming out of such a relatively small community.

I hate it when this happens! It screwed me and I'm so pissed because I went to see this Mirror Mirror movie thinking it was "Snow White and the Huntsman." Unbelievable! I did NOT like this Mirror Mirror movie!

I think what happens is it starts out as a coincidence but turns into a rivalry. I'd bet money on it that every studio deals with screen plays and projects that are pretty similar, but every blue moon, two studios decide to greenlight something of a similar nature. When Studio A finds out in a trade magazine that Studio B is going forward with a similar project, Studio A rushes to get put together the production for their project.

I am really curious as to the timeline of both of these projects? Who got the ball rolling first?

MASH, Catch-22 and the two Columbus films in 1992.
