Two Snow White films within months of each other

How did this happen?

reply

I feel like this has happened before with another movie...

reply

It has happened before and more than once. I just can't remember.

reply

Yeah, it's happened with quite a few movies. Off the top of my head there was Armageddon/Deep Impact, The Illusionist/Prestige, ANTZ/A Bug's Life, Mission to Mars/Red Planet, Dante's Peak/Volcano.

reply

Thank you because that was bugging me.

reply

Also Robin Hood and Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves, both released in 1991.

reply

I'm too lazy to check, but I think two movies about Wyatt Earp, but they might be off by 6 months of one another.

reply

I always wondered about this too. Does this happen because:

a) Ideas get pitched to different companies and get stolen.
b) Ideas in the movie business get generated by a computer program and they all use the same version.
c) Ideas get developed on decadent parties and movie producers don't remember the next morning but basically think anything written on a paper napkin is a good idea
d) Hollywood works like a recycling center / compost heap where ideas just resurface as the same *beep* every few years?
e) Hollywood uses some illegal website to download cracked "ideaz"?
f) It's destiny, and everything happens for a reason

reply

Wyatt Earp and Tombstone.

reply

How about "Saving Private Ryan" & "Saving Ryan's Privates"

:)

.

reply

You are so wrong about Robin Hood. What other Robin Hood are you talking about?

reply

you're right. 'robin hood - men in tights' was released two years later.

dont forget thor and cap america - 2 avengerz moviez in same yr? wtf?

I live, I love, I slay, and I'm content

reply

Wow you really don't understand the topic of this thread. Thor and Captain America are two completely different movies! Now if they made two Thor movies yes you could mention it.

reply

wat u talkin bout? they r 2 avengerz moviez in da same yr! usually there is only 1 like iron man or incredible hulk per yr

I live, I love, I slay, and I'm content

reply

They're not about a similar subject though. And they're made by the same studio, and part of the same universe, as opposed to competing films. You've definitely completely missed the topic of this thread.

reply

ok i got it - hunger gamez and brave - both have female archery

I live, I love, I slay, and I'm content

reply

mikey, I don't think they get what you're doing. sigh lol

reply

He's a troll, ignore him :)

reply

No - they are not different movies! They are interconnected, done with Marvel, and all those movies ultimately connect in The Avengers!!!

Even Iron Man has some of the same characters. The real connection is that THE SAME ACTORS PLAY THE SAME ROLES IN THE DIFFERENT MOVIES.

reply

friends with benefits and no strings attached.

reply

No Strings Attached and Friends With Benefits

Proud to say I missed both of those.

reply

yes and no because while those movies you all listed deal with the same basic theme/subject matter like an asteroid or a bugs those movies were not the same stories and in this case both Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the huntsman on the other hand are the same story or atleast are different versions of the exact same story unlike the ones you listed. It would be like if Sam Raimi released a new spider-man movie and yet that amazing spider-man movie was being released at the same time

reply

No, since that is copyrighted and would be impossible. Snow White is a fairy tale that's hundreds od years old, so that comparison isn't really apt either.

-
Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.

reply

I think that's nitpicking. If Spider-man wasn't copyrighted, then the analogy would be right on.

reply

The point still stands with the Spiderman comparison.

reply

I have to agree that thematic similarity is not the same as having the exact same character.

reply

"Snow White and the Huntsman", "Mirror Mirror", and the tv series "Once Upon a Time" on ABC.

all different versions of Snow White.

reply

GAH brownjenkn thank you!!! I knew there was something. I saw both...eh.

reply

i luv both of those moviez and thought they were both better than da godfather

I live, I love, I slay, and I'm content

reply

No Strings Attached and Friends With Benefits

Proud to say I missed both of those.

I thought it was funny that after (the excellent) Black Swan the two main actresses, Portman and Kunis, then went and made essentially the same (trashy) film.

I can only assume this sort of of romcom is a guarenteed payday as it does nothing for the credibility of the actresses involved.

reply

haha

reply

I know Spider-Man is copyrighted but all copyright aside I think you now what I mean. Snow White is been done several times with the 1930's disney version being the most popular but its just strange to have two movies based on the same character coming out in the same year I dont think thats ever happened before atleast as far as American Cinema goes?

reply

[deleted]

Happens at least once a year. Mainly because screenplays get passed around from studios and they may pass on the original but like the premise enough to hire their own writers to throw something together.

reply

Don't forget Turbulence/Con Air, Feardotcom/The Rings, Rob Roy/Braveheart, Tombstone/Wyatt Earp, Saving Private Ryan/The Thin Red Line, Varsity Blues/Any Given Sunday, Sixth Sense/Stir of Echos, Coming Home/ The Deer Hunter

reply

the killing of john lennon / chapter 27

reply

Not to seem as if I'm putting down 'Mirror, Mirror', I haven't seen the movie and I don't intended to but 'SWATH' will pass the domestic box office total of 'MM' today or tomorrow. Numbers like that 'speak' for themselves.

"You can't have my heart."

reply

Actually Mirror, Mirror was by far the better movie. SWATH was all CGI and the godawful wooden acting of Ms. Stewart. I found it tedious and poorly written. MM was funny as well as dramatic.

reply

And also "JFK", "Love Field," and "Ruby."

reply

wyatt earp and tombstone

reply

It is rather surprising that both film based on Snow White are 2 months apart.

reply

The Illusion and Prestige were both excellent movies! Thx for reminding that. :D
I enjoyed all the magic that period...lol

reply

You took all the movies out of my mouth that I thought of. Picking my brain I can also think of The Truman show/ Ed TV, Saving Private Ryan/ A Thin Red Line, Million Dollar Baby/ Cinderella Man, No Strings Attached/ Friends with Benefits. Some are a little of a stretch but I think they are good comparisons

[deleted]

Valmont and Dangerous Liaisons were made within a year of each other

reply

There was also all the penguin movies around the time of Happy Feet.
Also, Finding Nemo / Shark Tale, and Red Eye / Flight Plan.

reply

In the 1960s there were 2 Harlow films out about the same time, one starred Carol Lynley and the other starred Carol Baker. I think

reply

[deleted]

It is just one of those things. It is called "dueling movies".

reply

After just watching this Julia Roberts version's trailer, I have to say this is like two VERY... V E R Y different things... yeah, both this and "Snow White and the Huntsman" are based on the classic fairytale... but that's about it...

It's like releasing a 1960s style Batman movie and a Christopher Nolan Batman movie at the same time...

reply

I think this will be better, because it is originally a children's book so it should be loving, funny and enjoyable to watch. Not dark and scary, and since this movie is 92% fresh I am predicting Snow White and the Huntsmen will be rotten, with Kristen Stewart giving a bad/fake performance by default

reply

people working in film nowadays are severely lacking original ideas

reply

Snow White movies have been made a dozen times. People have always lacked original ideas, and as times goes on there are much less original ideas to be had.

-
Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.

reply

Actually, it wasn't originally a children's book. It was one of the Grimm's Fairy Tales. Originally, it was very, very gruesome.

reply

This is like those television series "The Borgias" and "Borgias" released the same year. Strange coincidences. It's almost like the creators are trying to outcompete one another.

reply

Both studios stole the idea from the same place, thinking they're the only ones smart enough to steal it.

reply

Tarsem did about the same thing with Immortals/Wrath of the Titans. Making the art version of commercial schlock coming out fairly soon after.

reply

I have no intention of paying to watch either Snow White movie, but I suspect the Huntsman version will fair better at the box office for multiple reasons.

Timing: It's not opening next to the Hunger Games.

Overall look: Dark Grim

Star popularity : Theron is gorgeous as evil queen and Stewart has a fan base of Twilighters curious to see her in big budget special effects commercial film .

Granted this film too would have come in #2 if it opened the same week as Hunger Games.

reply

Good joke. Stewart's fanbase didn't follow her to any of her movies outside of the Twilight world.

It will make more money because it's an action movie but it could flop. Afterall it cost $200 million. That's a lot of money for a newbie director.

reply

I just hope that Snow White and the Hunstman will do better. I guess it helps that film has more recognizable stars like Charlize Theorn and Chris Hemsworth which could help the film a great deal.

reply

Yeah Charlize looks and sounds stunning but some parts of the trailer look kind of bad.

reply

Oh nonsten, you are so transparent, where is your proof of this $200mil budget? I have seen figures from $70 million (the director) to $100 million (Variety).

reply

[deleted]

Why so stupid? These numbers were made before the movie was shoot. They planned to do it for $100 million. And even if it costs more. Do you think that the movie won't be able to gross more than $140-200 million? It could be a success and gross over $600 million.

You are so transparent.

Not for you.

I don't see these movies as remotely close.... Mirror Mirror is comedic romp for kids.... the SW and the Huntman is going to be much deeper and darker. much closer to a cross between the Grimm's version and Joan of Arc Not kid oriented from what the previews show..... I never pictured Snow white leading armies.

Not a comparable situation .....

I don't suffer from my ADDICTION to SEAN & VIGGO---I enjoy every single second.

reply

To the OP, that's Hollywood.

Two volcano movies, two Wyatt Earp movies, two CGI insect movies, two mall cop movies. Stuff happens.

For the sole reason that it doesn't ask us to believe that Kristen Stewart is considered more attractive than Charlize Theron, I gotta say that Mirror Mirror is the stronger of the two movies (though I ultimately found this movie okay).
